I have always been told and believed it for years that you cannot put a halogen bulb into a 250 headlight. I even bought a pattern light unit from David Silver which subsequently went rather opaque after only a few months use. Whilst having a closer look at my original unit I discovered that the halogen bulb fits straight in and all the wiring is the same as well. Am I just a bit thick or has anybody else believed this misconception as well???

I think the original concern was whether the CB250N generator could supply the extra power? 55/60W from 40/45W and only 135W generator on the 250.
Was the pattern headlight lense polycarbonate? Common problem with the early plastic headlights as some lamps- Quartz Halogen especially- emit UV light which degrades the plastic. Lots of early car headlights suffer from it.
HID or even LED upgrade would be a great solution!

I think it was some type of plastic but I am unsure about which material exactly, it is a shame because otherwise it looked really nice and it fitted to perfection.

Could you maybe fit a generator off a 400 on the 250?

Have a look at this site, seem to know their P45T & P43t s. www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffybulbs.htmI'll keep my CB250NA standard, but this is my favourite option for my CB400F & other CB250Ns, "The CityVision is a 35/35W is the only low Wattage high light output H4 bulb available
40% brighter than std Quartz Halogen
Pt.no. B1235MOHS1
£13.95
Formally known as the Moto Vision HS1"
(Disappointed that the DSS pattern item has a plastic lense, I was giong to get one, I'll give it a miss now).

Nix on swapping the generator- would be a big job as from different manufacturers due to the different lineage of the 250 to the 400.
I think Speedshop claims to be able to rewind a 250 generator to get more power out of it, but not cheap...

Just to add - yes the wiring and headlamp shell was the same on both 250 and 400 models.
The 400 had a chrome rim (where the beam adjust screw was also located) which accommodated the halogen reflector unit.

I'd be very careful with any claim that spedshop make, from personal experience.

After fiddling with the whole thing again, I discovered that the H4 halogen bulb that fitted straight into the 250 reflector seems to be a piece from the historical museum: there is a collar on it like on the ordinary bulb rather than the three legged one that is fitted on modern halogen bulbs. Has anybody else got one of these fitted in their 400s (or even 250s) Is that type of bulb still available now?

Just to correct an error I made: the DS pattern part is actually a proper glass lens, mine went a bit opaque after a few weeks but as it has turned out that seemed to be a layer of condensation which could be cleaned off. The part itself seems to be ok to use.

Hiya ,, from memory I think the 400 lens had a shield inside to reflect the light around the shell of the lens , where the 250 was just plain,, might be wrong but when I got mine roadworthy I used a 250 front end ,as the lens and shell where damaged on my bike ,, so still using a 250 candle and lens.. lol
