Has anyone ever changed the mileage on a CB250 / 400N speedo by taking it apart ?
Nothing illegal.........just wondered if it was possible and if anyone had ever done it?
This would be of use if one's speedo broke and they wanted to replace it with the exact same mileage showing.
Cheers

I think it is illegal to tamper with a odometer whether adding or subtracting mileage. I had to have the clocks replaced on my Ducati Multistrada while it was still under warranty. They replaced the whole dash which then read 0 miles, I asked them if they could not set the mileage the same as it was on the original clocks so I knew exactly what mileage the bike had done and was told they were not legally allowed to do it even though they would have been adding mileage and not misleading anyone. That said I remember seeing a guy hook a set of car clocks up to an air drill in a place where I once worked and just leaving it running all night to readjust the mileage.

Hmm... I though winding back speedos was defeated years ago- but a quick test with one shows that you can in fact wind these SD speedos backwards.
Quick test with my battery drill on high speed got the equivalent of 32 MPH- reversed it and the numbers do start to go down. So at a rate of well, 32 miles an hour- it would only take me 31.25 hours to get back each 1000 miles showing on the speedo.
I need a bigger battery.....
I'm sure someone- maybe wazzbo- has peeled one apart to do some cosmetic restoration- I would think the mechanism would be easy to change once the tin was open....

I never looked at that when I had my clocks apart Paul, next time I will see how to do it but as the tc had only done 3600 miles I won't be winding it back!

nothing Illegal about changing mileage at a dealers when new clocks are fitted. Easily done on most things these days with a lap top, its not a grey area, you can mess about with what your mileage is on the odometer to your hearts content, you just cant try and persuade anyone its different or change it before MOT' tests or anything like that.

I don't know SW that's what the dealer told me and they wouldn't put the original mileage on the new clocks. Have people not been prosecuted for clocking cars ?

Just put "is changing the mileage on a car illegal" in to Bing and this thread appears on page 2 of the results. Doesn't take long does it

there is no law to say what the mileage says ,only if yo say its true then its fraud superdream easy to clock all i can say you need to remove the speedo from the housing and a small screwdriver.

Here is a bright idea ! Say your bike has 45,000 miles on it and your clocks give up and you buy and fit a new set of clocks which read 20,000 Miles. Just get an indelible pen and wright '+25,000 Miles' on the clock ! Now aint I a bright boy, save all that electric screwdriver malarkey.

Can be done manually very easily, once the bevel has been removed the digits can be rotated to whatever you require. The bevel will be mashed when put back on but is concealed by the casing.
