Hi Scania, in answer to your question, when the bike was on the stand in neutral I could maybe get up to 5 or 6 k revs before the engine missed and spluttered badly and past that the engine would just lose all power, and if I left the throttle open at that point it would just die. I pulled the spark plugs and they were both black and wet, so I ruled out fuel starvation. When under load (riding) I could maybe get 3 to 4k revs, but even on the slightest incline the engine would lose power drastically, I'd struggle to get 2 or 3k, about 15 to 20 mph, push-bikes overtaking me! After I fitted the new CDI the engine ran better than it ever has, smoothly up to 8k revs, I don't want to take it any higher. Hope this answers your question mate. If the new CDI hadn't made any difference I would have offered it for sale on the forum, Rex's rightly don't accept returns. Cheers.

I had a fuel starvation problem a while ago and it responded to cleaning the fuel filter. But the symptoms for that were slightly different. Hi BD, What were the symptoms you had for fuel starvation and at what revs did it occur ? Hi Scania, Mine just kept on running onto reserve prematurely with enough fuel still in the tank, it kept on going for a while when turning the fuel tap on reserve. That was independent on what revs it was doing and it was down to a blocked fuel filter.

We've received the stator from the bike at our workshops. The owner didn't have the tools to check it himself so sent it to us. We found that one of the windings was 50 ohms out of limits and we'll be rewinding it on the CNC machine.
This system is an example of Honda making things more complex then they need be. There are a total of 5 windings that power and signal the CDi unit and failure of any one can play havoc with the ignition.
Things are also hampered by the fact Honda give very wide resistance readings in the manuals. We have readings from known good stators to compare with stators sent in.
We strongly recommend owners carefully test the generator and write down all the figures before fitting new CDi units. If you have an obvious fault things are simple, if not, with the readings in front of you, its easy to spot a reading that is either at one end of tolerance compared to the other readings (from experience this indicates a failure even if its inside the limits Honda set. If all the other readings are in the middle and one is at the end of tolerance range the one at the end has a problem). The other thing to note is that there are 400N and 400T models - with different readings for the pick-ups. I've not seen enough 400 stators to know if mixing them causes problems.
If a new CDi unit is fitted to a failed stator you can damage the CDi and you certainly invalidate the warranty

This my current situation: I rang and spoke to Marcus Rex about the overheating and ruined pipes and sent him pictures. He said he really didn't know why, he'd never seen that extent of over heating before and previous cdi's he supplied were fine. I sent him my stator for testing and returned his cdi. He repaired my stator and though he previously stated that any damage caused to the new cdi by a faulty stator would invalidate the warranty, he sent me another new cdi under warranty. Stator and 2nd cdi now fitted and the bike seems to run fine again with no obvious signs of overheating. I haven't had a chance to test the bike properly yet on a decent ride, but soon as I have I'll let you all know the results. This time I won't post any premature glowing comments, I want to be 100% sure.
