This is my husband's tax disc collection for his SD, he bought it in 1994. Note the gap when it changed from May to August - this was when the bike was stolen outside my flat: it was later recovered and we were lucky to get it back!

Currently £38 for the 250 or 400...so where do the 40 quid discs come from? it's a mystery.

Just checking the other items in our little collection, bike tax went up in 01 and 02, it was £60 and £65 for the CB 500 then, for 03 it went back down again, I have no idea why... Maybe emissions or something like that??? Have you all started superdreaming recently or are you all on SORN?

Mystery Solved! Just pulled this from The House Of Commons Library, looks like the then Labour government reformed the road tax system for motorcycles, the idea was to encourage more bikes and less car usage. It had the effect of actually reducing the cost of road tax for many bikes, so a 250cc bike dropped a tenner to £30 and a 400cc dropped by £35! Does anybody remember this momentous event?
"The Government’s motorcycling strategy gave an overview of how the Vehicle Excise Duty system had changed. In effect, the previous system of VED for motorcycles had three bands based on engine capacity; this was reorganised into four bands from May 2002. The strategy stated that: This new structure recognised the changes in the structure of the motorcycle fleet, and the benefits of motorcycles compared with cars – especially for commuting. It also represented a reduction in VED for all motorcycles over 150cc, or approximately 630,000 (66%) out of a total fleet of 955,000 at the time it was introduced. The owners of some machines, i.e. those between 251-400cc, saw their VED reduce by £35 a year – nearly 54%.82"
