I have just started to clean the engine and used Astonish Oven Cleaner and Scothbrite pads both bought in a Pound Shop and to be honest the results were quite good. A lot cheaper than Autosol.

I use astonish kitchen polish on the alloy, if you really want to go to town and get it show shiny there is a polish called white diamond which comes up amazing! Not cheap though. Lucas metal polish makes the chrome bits shine nicely but on alloy you will be polishing all day with that!

If I don`t want a mirrored finish on alloy, I use wire wool with solvol to get a rough case up to the level of shine I want then finish with autosol and dusters.
For a mirror finish I have a polishing wheel.
I only use a wax polish on chrome as solvol and the like are abrasive and will ruin the chrome over time.

Some day I am going to learn how to fold and weld stainless steel, I may replace a few bits here and there with stainless steel or aluminium.
