I have just acquired a 1978 CB400A Hondamatic. The CDI unit is a Nippondenso 070000-0271. Can anyone please confirm that this is correct for this model. (I hope so because I sent it to Electric World for checking and have just paid them £63 for them saying it is OK) Also can anyone advise where I can buy a Parts List for the Hondamatic part. I have the CB400T Parts List but it doesn't include any of the automatic bits-of which there are many. And am I right assuming the model is the CB400T but with the automatic bits added?

I've recently bought an American Hawk Hondamatic, good to know I'm not alone on here lol. What do you think of your Hondamatic? Bit on slow side to say the least but a pleasant bike to ride if you're not in a hurry is my opinion.

Thanks both. NA44 superdream; can I assume that the CDI unit is the correct one for my Hondamatic? The reason I ask is that it seems to have been messed about with by previous owner/s. eg; It has the larger VB 31B carbs fitted, and a siamese exhaust and no collector box. I assume the larger carbs will be an advantage (will they?) but am not at all sure the exhaust set up will be. Having said that I don't know if this model should have twin down pipes and collector box (does it?) as i don't have a parts list for the Hondamatic. Anyone know who might supply one???
Davefirestorm; I'm afraid I can't comment as to whether I get on with it. I got it as a non-runner and the friend I bought it from had had it for 6 years and was unable to sort it out, and the person he bought it from had the same problem. The reason/s I have it is; a) I want to know how it works and what it's like to ride. b)As I get older it might keep me biking longer, it's got an electric leg, every little helps and c) I need something in the shed to mess about with this winter.

Yes, that CDI does appear to be correct (most 400s have the Hitachi CDI) You should have a 2 into 2 exhauast system as standard, but if the 2 into one is still servicable keep it on and accumulate the parts for the 2 into 2? CMSNL is a very helpful site to determine part numbers, though there is a lot of commonality with the 400T www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb400a-hawk-hondamatic-1978-usa_model1009/partslist/

It should have 2 into 2 and collector box, can't help regards the CDI.Just put new pair of silencers on from Silvers and they fit//look/sound as per the originals mine has original collector box.I bought mine because I couldn't bend my left leg and I fitted highway footrests to the engine bars so I could rjide feet forward, bike pulls away in 2nd so no need to use 1st it's not a fast bike 80 mph is about the limit and acceleration is slow too also no engine braking,My 250cc twist and go scooter is faster
