Hi Guys,
I recently fired up my newly bought 400sd after being stood for some time. The engine sounded poorly but did quiet down after a while. the noise sounds like a medium pitch wearing noise but disappears after a few second, engine can be hot or cold and happens randomly. I suspected cam in the head wearing, and as then engine was smokey when cold I thought I would change it for my spare. With the new engine fitted that runs a lot better and feels more powerful, tonight I had exactly the same noise. The only thing that has been changed is the complete engine with generator and clutch but Using the original carbs and ancillaries. This makes me think the noise is from something else but does sound like it is from under the tank???
any suggestions would be great, and thanks in advance.

Rev counters and speedo units can sometimes make an odd noise on the move.
When you totally kill the engine and you are still hurtling along, is the noise still there? This will eliminate a lot.

Is this noise definitely related to engine speed- i.e. bike stood still and just revving? With a different engine? Very strange....

could be your rev counter cable, they can whine sometimes

This sounds very familiar. My 400NC very occasionally will make a fairly high pitched whirring noise which is pretty loud ,it will then stop and not happen again for weeks. As it only ever seems to do it while i am moving it is very hard (with a crash hat on!) to trace where it comes from and ,of course .as soon as I stop so does the noise, even tho I try to hold the trottle in the same position as i get off for a listen. It has done it when stood still in traffic so it is not related to rolling along the road. It does sem to emanate from the top of the motor, best as I can tell-seems like a very similar issue to Adams bike........

thanks for the replies guys, it could well be the speedo. I dip the clutch and let the revs die down and the noise remains the same.

The metal speedo drive on the front axel may not be seated properly, this will give the sound you are describing. It will need replacing if so but they are cheap...
