I taxed my 400 Superdream yesterday for a year by D.D.......around £3.50 a month....works out about a pound and a half more expensive over the year so worth doing.
We were discussing this last night. Surely one can cancel the D.D at any time? During the winter months for example?
If you sold your bike before the year was out you would naturally cancel the tax as it won't transfer to the new owner anyway? My question is, even if you sell the bike (which I am not going to) are you still liable for the full year of tax?

P.S - as most will know you can only tax them for a year - the six month option is not there on anything up to around 400cc.

Surely one can cancel the D.D at any time? Yes, just SORN the bike aswell
As soon as you sell it you run out of insurance you have to sorn aswell. The tax is not transferable so same applies when you sell it.SORN IT.
My question is, even if you sell the bike are you still liable for the full year of tax Answer is NO
Sellers are being abit foolish on this one as they have been canciling the insurance and tax only to sell the bike... which makes it difficult for the average buyer... Why not sell the bike when its tax & insurured and cancel after the money and the bike changes hands? I think the government understands this issue very well and are trying to stop poeple selling there vehicles because they get no tax from the sale of the vehicle. Plus the added bonus of confused poeple driving with out tax and possibly insurance after the sale, where upon they can fine them... Ive heard of buyers being B**lsh**ted by sellers that it taxed wher they do not understand the law and getting fined.. Simple understand the new tax law or get fined...

you are nick, unless you sell the vehicle or declare it sorn, then the direct debit is automatically cancelled when they receive the v5.

Not used the DD method yet, but I assume you pay in advance- in which case if you sell or SORN you still lose the rest of the month. And the buyer pays for a full month despite only taking ownership for part of it. So the main scandal of the govt pocketing all the part months carries on. I also firmly believe the ending of the tax discs was to finally break the link between actually spending all this road fund licence money on the roads? It is now just another revenue stream for the taxman....
But the monthly DD still appeals to me- so you could tax your bike from say April until November and reduce the amount of money you have to lay out at the start. When you have a few bikes this lending the government money can add up to a significant amount!

There are civil servants paid big money to figure out complicated ways to confuse us and bring in fines for the government and collect money for the ruling class who have governments in their pockets.

I didn't know that if you buy a bike and it's sorned, this sorn doesn't carry over, the new owner has to sorn it again or tax it. I found this out when they sent me back tax notice for £39 7 months after I bought the bike. I phoned them and told them I didn't know about the sorn not carrying over. He was a cheeky sod, so I sorned the bike and told them I wasn't paying the back dated tax. You could end up in court or clamped was the response from Mr cheeky sod, fill yer boots mate, see you there, and if you can get past the 2 10 stone Bull mastiffs, multiple locks and pissed off owner your more than welcome to try and clamp it, was Tinytots response.
They're flesh mate, not crystal!!
