Hi all, recently bought 1979 250 Superdream on e-bay which had an oil leak between barrels and cylinder head, other than that I believe it had been in use. I have removed the cylinder head/block and found a bent inlet valve which I have now replaced. I was wondering what other items it would be worth checking while I'm at it? At the moment the carbs are off being cleaned as is the cylinder block/head etc. May as well make the most of the opportunity to replace any other parts while I'm at it. Be gratefull for any suggestions.

Welcome to the forum, did you check the cam chain and tensioner before removing the head?

(oil shows at the front toward the bottom of the barrel) Just check when you do reassemble it that the 2 bolts with the rubber sleeve on are on the correct hole. ( from memory I think it's the inner left . but check) Regards Graham PS.. Some very early sd's (1978) did not have any sleeve on bolts though.

Hi and thanks for the suggestions, The engine had been replaced at some time with one from a newer SD as it doesn't have a kick start. Fortunately I had done a bit of research about potential causes of the oil leak (found a previous post on the forum )prior to removing the head/barrels etc and was relieved to find that two of the cylinder head bolts had rubber seals on them and did appear to be in the correct holes althought they both had PTFE tape wrapped around them too which suggested someone had previously taken a look. Just got the head and barrels back from being soda blasted and there doesn't seem to be any signs of any cracks in either or any damage to any mating surfaces. The original cylinder base gasket was a very flimsy translucent job and had been aided by some blue stuff presumably some kind of gasket seal. Maybe the head bolts hadn't been torqued down correctly or a poor quality/damaged gasket been fitted. Guess I'll find out when I put it back together and fire it up. Cheggy mentioned about checking the cam chain and tensioner, must say I didn't take too close a look at either before removing the head, could that possibly have anything to do with the oil leak?

It's also worth checking the other oil controls on the head bolts; from memory, the 4 inner bolts have copper washers under the heads, which shouldn't be re-used. The outer bolt holes are oil passages, and the hollow dowels the bolts run through between head & barrel have a rubber seal round the rear outer dowels which should be replaced. Have a look at the cylinder diagram & cylinder head cover diagram in cmsnl.com

The cam chain adjust bolt and nut have either a copper washer or an O ring to stop oil leaking from them .
