Hi all,
I'm back on a 400N after an absence of thirty odd years. I've had many bikes in the meantime, mostly British but this one is proving interesting and a lot easier to work on than I had feared with a "modern" bike. It's been off the road for five years but is generally in good condition. The only thing I have noticed which is that it smokes on the right cylinder when cold but this seems to clear up after a few minutes running. Starts on the button without choke so perhaps its a tad rich although the smoke looks blue.
When I bought the bike it only had a side stand so I managed to locate a replacement on eBay. It came with the shaft and a C shaped bracket and two springs. I also had to buy a bracket for the right side which I believe bolts onto the centre of the shaft?. My problem is that I don't know which way the springs connect. Looking at the parts book one seems to go to the C bracket but where then and which one, the heavy or the lighter one. I can also see a hook on the frame over the stand and a bracket welded to the right side of the stand, is this for the second spring?. If anybody can advise me I would be very grateful. I'm looking forward to getting it back on the road but so far the Irish license authority had messed up the documents by not declaring it as Vintage.
TIA,
Peter

Hello and welcome Peter. These few pictures may help you decipher the stand and spring arrangement.

P.S - Correct me if I am wrong but from memory, there should only be the one spring on the main stand?

The one shown in the above photo is what you get now from d silvers, i think the other springs are previous parts no longer available. also on cmsnl the side stand has two shown but only one available.

Just had a look at a CB400N exploded parts diagram (CMSNL) and it appears the diagram has caused confusion again - this happens a lot.
Note that parts 3 and 4 (if you look below) were not fitted as they are not listed, although they are on the diagram.
I'm assuming this was probably found on some of the euro models that had the suicide side stand.

Fungobat, brilliant..!! those photos answered all my questions and saved me hours of head scratching . I was indeed confused by the CMS diagram and also by the fact that the stand arrived with two springs. In any case once I saw the photo I had it in place in seconds. Thanks for getting down and dirty for the photos.
SRX600. I've ordered an adaptor for my compression tester, however I think I may have discovered a possible cause for the smoke from the right side. I removed the exhausts and when I looked into the head I noticed that the right exhaust valve was oily which would indicate oil running through the guide. I'm not sure if there are seals on these or if it's a sign of worn valve guides.

Thanks Wazzbo, just spotted them on the diagram. I bought a complete gasket set recently so I'll check to see if they were included. There's a fair amount of oil coming down the valve so it looks as though the head will be coming off sooner rather than later. I had a word with a local shop and they told me that they were selling off any old stock that had not moved in years, mainly gaskets but a couple of piston sets which unfortunately were for the 250n.
