This place all reads quite civil and friendly, and well resourced with knowledgeable folk.
Picked this old girl up a week ago. It's a little shabby but doesn't seem to have suffered too much abuse, maybe a little neglect in age but seems mostly to be all there. Aside from the ding in the tank missing indicators, grab-rail, and electrical tape seat cover, a couple snapped off lugs on the side covers, it 's pretty much just basically dirty. I don't intend on doing a lot to it immediately, the plan is to get it legal and tidied up so an acceptable standard and just enjoy it as a commuter/toy for a wee while. And then re-tweak bit's as I go. I was looking for a project to carve up and modify the hell out of, I don't feel this is really it though, it'd seem a shame to do something like that to this anyway as it's quite a practical bike and should serve well and look quite sharp on the streets as a bit of practical retro with a lick of paint and a polish. It was $400 kiwi dollars, so I didn't do too bad. The only rust anywhere so far is some surface rusting on the bottom side of the seat which basically falls off rubbing it with my hand.
Engine seems a tidy runner, starts no problem with no choke, it's all there the cable seems to have seized though. Actually surprising how easy it starts, a couple squirts on the throttle and hit the go button and it's idling fine. Clutch is slipping a little on the higher gears, and there's a bit of what I'd call cam-chain rattle, but my experience with early Honda's suggests that's not all bad or uncommon..
There's a short shopping list for now, I figured some of you may be able to point me in the right direction for a couple of them at least? I don't fancy my chances of these turning up locally, there's not a ton of these around here anymore. I might be lucky, but I doubt it. I had a friend in Wellington who found one of these around 10 years ago practically new, not even a single scratch, anywhere.. And he didn't pay much more than I paid for this one.
1: Indicators. I'll need these for obvious reasons. I don't fancy running out and buying the OG replacements off ebay right now though. I picked up some locally, new, and period correct looking. I can fashion something to attach to the front bracket on the fork legs and sort that relatively hassle free and tidy, like an L bracket, or is there an existing bracket available that mine is missing? I'm reluctant to go drilling into the bodywork to fit the rears though in leau of being without the grab-handle looking thing running from the rear shock toward the cowling/tail-piece though. Any alternative recourse for me there that someone knows of? An earlier model or later model that has some bracket without the grab handle? Maybe someone even has a grab rail to sell me?
2: I'll need to sort the seat, or at least a new cover, while I'm doing it though...any of those Giuliari seats around as per the thread in the accessories section of this forum? Or would I have more success procuring rocking-horse shit?
3: Side covers? Both left and right. Mine are there and in tidy nick bar the snapped lugs. Likely I could bodge something together with a box-cutter, file, and some type of backyard plastic welder (glue gun..) But I know it'd bug the shit out of me. I've an irrational OCD about bodywork being straight, or held on very firmly without rattling and threatening to be blown off on the Motorway at least..
4: No kickstart. I'm not sure if that bugs me yet or not. I'll assume I'm just requiring the clutch cover and kickstart components and my engine will gladly accept those simple components and have a functional kickstart if I do decide it bugs me?
