Rooting through a batch of old SD spares today- mostly what Karen calls "shite". Have to say I agree with her TBH! Found this at the bottom of a container. Bearing in mind the guy I bought the spares off made a living breaking bikes down and selling the parts on Ebay? Rest in Peace CB400NA ETH 237V- you lasted all the way until 2012/13 and then got ripped apart by a cowboy.....

These got skipped today- all you see had a grand total of 3 lugs between them! It does show why a lot of the bikes we see for sale are not original- not many of these are still in the stock livery.....

were new lugs not being made?
I'm always very careful when removing the side panels, one of my lugs is aradited on. When I bought the 400 the guy needed to refit the battery, I didn't like the way he was going about getting the panel off and feared he was about to break it so stopped him and let me do it!

The blue panels had no lugs at all and one had a crack through it to boot. I hate throwing historic parts away as much as anybody- but with the availability of NOS and pattern panels still, they are just not worth saving.
I would not let anybody take a side panel off for me. The design fault was always that because the lugs are rectangular- when 2 of the 3 are popped out the panel swivels so that the remaining one will never come out....

I have repaired side panels that were in a lot worse condition than these by filling them up with a 1/4 or 1/2 inch of that resin, hardner and plastic straw mix. I made up my own lugs out of aluminium or pvc piping then set the covers on their backs like saucers and left to set. Stronger than new, you will never break a side panel which has a half inch of plastic filler inside it. Any chance of retrieving those panels from the skip and sending them to Dublin with my Mug and Badges, I will pay in advance for the lot!

Anything is possible. I thought about making and gluing new lugs on them, then re-inforcing the back with fibre-glass, then grinding the old fronts off and re-facing with fresh plastic. Finally respraying in the correct colour and applying the best decals we currently can source.
Then I thought- bollocks- this is like Triggers broom and chucked them in the skip. I talked to a guy at Newark who can supply freshly moulded replacements with lugs that you can hang the bike off- I think 40 squid....

The decals are an issue right now and I hear it......(from me included).
After a heck of a lot of let downs last year, I am really hoping we have found the people to do them. I chased them on Tuesday of this week and the noises they made on the blower sounded very very positive - that said, I've been there before.
Fingers crossed.
