A question for the knowledgeable, which I am not! What year were the first Honda CB400N officially sold in England?

Never seen an "S" reg CB400N- but they must have been at least a few. The bike mags were testing the bikes by July 78, I think the range was announced in Spring 78. You may find this article interesting- note the confusion as always, as the headline bike appears to actually be "S" reg, but has Dream wheels and clocks and no kickstart on the engine..... www.dropbox.com/s/spamuukjxbj1ze2/CMM_Sep_2007_CB400_SuperdreamWM.pdf?dl=0

Tel's was a very early 400 (by reg)......there is a picture of it somewhere showing the reg number as well.
I'd go with Jun/Jul 1978 for sure.

The 250N in red (single disc) looks to have an inverted number plate on the image, which I think is a 5 rather than an S.
I have this edition of CMM somewhere.
A lot of the genuine articles from the time (1978), I think the bikes were on a T plate.

Note in the article how the brand new blue CB250NDB's side panel decals have been edited out of the picture.......
Again, I have this image somewhere in another publication (I think Honda literature) where the decals are in place.
It's edited to make all of the models look like 400's (in keeping with the aims of the article title) but in reality, a lot of these bikes used in the article were 250's.
Articles like this one did lead to the confusion amongst folk about what a 250 and 400 actually looked like from brand new.

And that's why we need people like you to keep the lineage true! So very few of the bikes we see for sale now are as they rolled out of the factory.....

I know of course - and there is nothing wrong with a non standard bike.
I was just saying that the media in the older days did put out quite a bit of guff. But they've got a heck of a lot better. I think because they listen to enthusiasts and have access to information more than they did all those years ago.

Thank you all for the info, err, I think! I just lost the argument, I thought the CB400N started in UK in 1979.

But I mean did you notice anyone looking at it?
Or were you concentrating on riding it so much that you did not notice?
P.S - where did the amber reflector go?
