A question for the knowledgeable, which I am not!
What year were the first Honda CB400N officially sold in England?

My first Superdream was an early one 1978 on an S plate

Never seen an "S" reg CB400N- but they must have been at least a few. The bike mags were testing the bikes by July 78, I think the range was announced in Spring 78. Tel's was a very early 400 (by reg)......there is a picture of it somewhere showing the reg number as well.
I'd go with Jun/Jul 1978 for sure.

The 250N in red (single disc) looks to have an inverted number plate on the image, which I think is a 5 rather than an S.
I have this edition of CMM somewhere.
A lot of the genuine articles from the time (1978), I think the bikes were on a T plate.

Note in the article how the brand new blue CB250NDB's side panel decals have been edited out of the picture.......
Again, I have this image somewhere in another publication (I think Honda literature) where the decals are in place.
It's edited to make all of the models look like 400's (in keeping with the aims of the article title) but in reality, a lot of these bikes used in the article were 250's.
Articles like this one did lead to the confusion amongst folk about what a 250 and 400 actually looked like from brand new. |

And that's why we need people like you to keep the lineage true! So very few of the bikes we see for sale now are as they rolled out of the factory.....

I know of course - and there is nothing wrong with a non standard bike.
I was just saying that the media in the older days did put out quite a bit of guff. But they've got a heck of a lot better. I think because they listen to enthusiasts and have access to information more than they did all those years ago.
