I understand that numbers that were not put on the database in late 70s early 80s are not transferable and to transfer a number you need to have the vehicle with an MOT and tax or sorn in place,DVLA do have numbers to sell but believe only one that have not been used so you would have to source the vehicle with number you want

Your bike is showing on the DVLA database - last tax ran out in 1985 so that ties in with the date of theft.
DVLA run auctions and I believe this is how you can possibly go about getting it back. I requested a number from them recently that had never been issued and they emailed me saying they would consider putting the number on their next auction. Around two months later I got an email saying the number would be included in the next auction.
I managed to win the number and it is now on my Bandit. You could try asking them the same? The only difference is that your old number was actually issued whereas mine never was - so this may cause an issue, especially if the number is still on your bike in a dim and dark place.
If they (dvla) did agree to list it, quite what they would start the auction off at is another matter.......I think they would see a value in NBH 6V.
6V could mean '6 volt' to a lot of people for example. Therefore a classic moped auto electrician with the name of Neil Bertrum Hardwick might pay handsomely for the reg...

for me NBH was "new black honda" had to wait 2 months for it as it was the "new" NA, orederd march & delivered in may '80 yes registered at dvla luton, (came from a shop called "purbecks")
find it strange that NBH6V is still on the records because it was written off as stolen thus it doesnt exist anymore, or perhaps i dont understand something thanks fungo for looking at the records, i have much affection for this bike cos it has a lot of memories to do with my dad aswell.

Hey no worries - I love seeing if old bikes still exist...
But that system means nothing really with regards to whether it still exists still or not. Do you know that it was definitely written off / destroyed?
I know it's a heck of a long shot, but the bike could still be in someone's shed for nigh on 30 years......and not necessarily the thief's - could be someone who bought it later in good faith and did nothing with it.
It never amazes me the amount of bikes that resurface after all these years on ebay wearing 1980's tax discs....

no it doesnt exist, was stolen, insurance paid out , but then found by me & another mate( if you see what i mean) after doing a bit of detective work(the police just didnt give a f...) a few months later after the insurance payout behind someones house minus engine, exhaust, wheels, saddle and a lot of other bits, was requisitioned "kindly" and have still got the bits that are left, so it doesnt exist but sort of exists........

Ah - I kind of recall this now - yes.
Well, does the frame still have it's number?
Also, I take it appropriate punishment was administered to the 'keeper' during the recovery?

as you say,the temporary keeper was "paid in kind" for his services . no frame number as it was a replacement frame from when i wrote it off when a car hit me head on a month after i bought the bike new, (at that time i bought the bike back for 100 pounds) this poor old bike has been through the wars but it saw an awful lot of very good times too, including a few things you shouldnt do on bikes like 17 to 20 yr olds do , as said on another forum ,virtualy lived on the thing.
