It dried out enough this afternoon to get this one out of the garage and ride into winter storage. Our garage at home is way too damp. Drained the tank and topped up with enough Aspen to do the 8 mile run only. Really enjoyed this bike this summer- it's been a lot of fun. Ying to the Superdream Yang! Very light and nippy. It's the only 2-stroke I have ever owned, and quite different to ride. It blew the front caliper seals early on as the lack of engine braking made hefty handfuls of front brake necessary. And now it's blown the rear master cylinder seals- another winter job. But the bike is bog standard original so I'm betting these are 35 year old hydraulics. It's also a bit twitchy at anything over 70ish- especially on bumpy roads. Give the bars a nudge at speed and it takes a while to settle down- bit disconcerting. I'm hoping that fitting UK spec lower bars will help, also nipping up the loose head bearings and replacing the cheapo chinese tyres it came with. And for next year it will be wearing it's UK Marine Blue clothes. I also have a set of NOS mirrors, NOS grab rail and electronic ignition kit to fit. Looking forward to fettling all this over winter....

But I had a mate with one of these when I had my XS500 and although I would swear blind at the time I had the better bike.....

The RD400 had quite a broad powerband for the 2 strokes of the day- but it does still all seem to happen in a rush when the revs hit a certain point! In low gears the front wheel gets a bit light... But the only thing that seems to happen when you change down coming up to junctions is that the rev counter needle goes up- almost feels as though it's accelerating!
