I was never too keen on the look of a Rat Bike, the dull black paint all over and a heap of stuff missing, the idea always reminded me of 'dark' people who like heavy metal music, have very weird types of tattoos etc. and prefer Halloween/Guy Fawkes night to Christmas, (when I say ' dark' people I don't mean dark skinned people). Though I must say I later worked with some of these 'dark' people and I was surprised to find some of them more genuine than the average person, despite their unusual music taste and weird tattoos !
It just occurred to me that the practical reason behind Rat bikes is 'Rust', that being as one puts away one's lovely chromed bike for the winter, out comes the winter hack rat, which has a thick coat of black (maybe hamerite paint on it) to endure the winter, and the fact that it looks so rough to begin with then a covering of muck does not make it look any worse off. Its like wearing a pair of oily mechanics overalls which one gets comfortable in, has a sort of an appeal, and no one expects it to look clean.

It maybe best to consider it a rat thus bites people......even innocent bystanders.
Does the bite contain disease or death? Possibly.

"who's is the rat bike?" the dude said when we where sitting drinking coffee and eating cake ( baked beans and a cheese and pickle sarnny, tomato and an apple in my case ) at the road side café in rhosnieger.........I paid for the cup I broke!
my reply was "it aint at rat bike, maybe its a rasta bike.. " but it got a mention............several heads turned during our little tour of north wales ( they where probably thinking....wtf bike is that!!!! ) with me in the lead.........
I don't have shed space to store the bike when parked at home so it lives outside in all the weather god chucks at it, and looked quite smart when it was first painted the colours it is now.........£15 total cost of the paint, with some to spare for the others..........so money well spent. It could do with a re paint now though, with yes you guessed it Hammerite......with an 8 years guarantee no less........33% free and cheaper in the local hardware store than in wilkinsons.........
my sd is a basic transport bike, one up from a bus, made to look as unattractive as possible so it don't get nicked........or vandalized like the lads bikes have been in the "village" they wernt so hard when we challenged them in fact the f8888s ran off!!
so, if I had the money I would spent £300 on a paint job, but alas I don't have lots of dosh, and would rather spend the money on the things of importance, such as engine, transmission, brakes, tyres, shocks and fuel.
were all different thank god, but still comrades, friends........fellow dreamers..........everyday bikers.......and yes, it is a wet dream when it rains!
no tattoo's but I like music from the pink fairies to vaungh Williams ( the tomos tallis one I turn up really load in the shed with my struggle thro adversity....its inspirational stuff dudes and duddettes, I even occaionally wear a suit and have been told I'm a different person when I do , I wear clothes to keep warm, its bloody cold in a suit......still, the amount of office buildings I see with the heating on full blast ( all the steam coming out of the gas flue on the roof ) and all the windows open.......?
global warming...........to keep the little darlings warm
ps got my MWE placement in a farm across the valley with excellent views, so will take some pics.........back roads I haven't been on before so the recce run there yesterday was really nice........
pps how do you start a horse??
