I came across this SD for sale recently, it had been for sale for several months for 800 euro but did not sell, now it has dropped to 500 euro. The problem is the log book is lost, the guy sounded okish on the phone, but I always heard people say never to buy a bike without a log book. I'd love to have a silver SD in my collection, any ideas ? I figure that the average guy selling a classic or vintage bike is not the typical hoodie out robbing bikes, but how could I tell for sure that it was not stolen, anything to look for. I would ring the police about it first before buying it, but they are still unlikely to be able to tell me the bikes history given it's age. I will have to sell my Suzuki to make space, and then sneak it in without my wife seeing it, but that is another story. www.donedeal.ie/vintagebikes-for-sale/honda-cb-250/7499368

I'd buy it at that price, try and retrieve the V5(but why doesn't he?only costs £25)and if no joy buy a frame with a V5 to use to stay legal. But is it worth the hassle and what if it's a stolen bike?lots of other legit SD's out there

UUD - This bike is originally from Oxfordshire, UK.
It is a risk. I guess you have to take a chance sometimes......on some occasions when you buy something that no one else wants to take a risk on, you can end up on top.
Maybe do a cheap £5 HPI on it to make sure the reg tallies with the engine and frame numbers and also get a letter / receipt off him confirming the bike is not stolen etc. Obviously you should make sure the guy says who he is (check his licence ID and address tallies).
If it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

It's a long way from Oxfordshire! Reg is on the DVLA system and correct for the year and model of bike. Actually first reg 01 May 1979. There-after it gets a bit out of step, as it was last tax expired in the UK August 1992 but the last MOT expired 29 June 2007. Why would it be MOT'd 15 years after the last tax was put on it would be one question to the seller!
But it might be because the bike is now in Ireland- do they have the same system as UK as the seller refers to "tax book" missing.
For £390 quid and a quick check with the cops and HPI there is not a lot can go wrong.....

How did you get all that MOT info then, Paul?
Do you have access to HPI ?

So this bike has not been taxed since 1992.
It is probably when it left England and headed to Ireland. They have their own system there.....NI and Ireland.
When I bought my Bandit over from Strabane, I had to register it here - it kept its original AHZ 5765 plate as well......that is until I put the private plate on it (GSF 600Y).

when the lads 400 was nicked the cops told him that there was no extradition treaty with eira ( southern Ireland ) ............but if all the numbers tally with a reg document and dvla have no record of it being stolen??
there may be sorn records........
bikes are still no cross referanceable on dvla.....?/wtf are they doing then!!!!!!! they hold all the info..;..........so if you have lost the reg number, dvla canot ( cannot, wtf doesn't the data base and or spread sheet have a "key" function for finding data, the subject data.... ) cross reference with engine of frame number, an easy task for c a computer in the real world surely??

Hi Guys, thanks for the DVLA info and advice, I was surprised to see all that info on here so fast. I will do more research into it before I buy it if I do by it, I rang the local police on it and they don't have any record of it or any this unusual.
