So I had a poke about on sunday on the sd and think I found the problem. Intermittent spark!!!! It sparks for a few seconds then won't spark at all. So I think the cdi is failing, yep the new Rex one I bought to alleviate the non starting from before. I will send it back under warranty and see what they say. I have fitted a new coil and plugs as well to see if that made a difference.
the joys of motoring.....lol

That's not good! Will be interested to see how it pans out, as I was going to get a Rex CDI for the 400 kicker I have lined up for restoration. I pinched the CDI off it for my NA after it's failed.

Conflicting feedback I hear about Rex's.
Obviously they seem to have a great range of re-designed ignition parts for old bikes and the knowledge to go with it. But maybe customer service could be better- did he come onto the old site and have a go at someone who alleged poor service?

As a side note I purchased a used genuine coil from DK spares last week and when I tried it on Sunday night the spark (compared the one fitted) was incredibly weak - hardly anything.....suffice to say, it's going back.

In one of my previous job I remember seeing a guy making his own replacement cdi unit, from what I remember he purchased a spool of copper wire from Radospares (RS Radionics), then wound so many turns around a former, a bit of soldering, a capacitor or two, put the lot in a box, and that was it, it worked?

Ok, I phoned Rex's to talk about the CDI unit, he said in his experience it's the generator thats failed not the cdi unit!! He also said he would charge me for testing the unit if I sent it back. I think his customer service is a bit crap really. He wasn't rude just a bit defensive about his product. Though he did give me a few pointers as to what to look for. I will replace the genny with my old one from my old engine and also the pickup as I know they worked

Well he's right about the generator being a common point of failure.
I suppose in line with his customer service outlook- if it is the generator you could claim you have successfully tested his cdi and can you now have your money back.....

When you say generator fail, do you mean the pulser coil? How do you test this?

Hi Megawatt I have no idea about testing, but I suppose it's in the haynes manual.
