OK so my 78 400N past its MOT today done about 50 miles with my Dad riding it and me on my 380 triple 2stroke. Got back home and the dream was red hot, pics below 1st is taken under the spark plug showing 77C 2nd from the oil filter 60C this is after the bike has stood for 20 mins, i had to use a pice of wood to hold the probe on the casing as it was to kin hot. Last pic is the temp of my 2stoke triple after standing for the same time but I ride this bike like I stole it. Do all dreams run this hot ? plugs are a nice biscuit colour and has fresh oil + filter in it what's wrong ? Cheers Russ

When they run hot is this not a sign that the carbs are a bit on the 'lean' side? I.e - too much air.
Pretty sure modern crap fuel does not help this situation.

I haven't used the MRS sausage gauge in mine YET ! but I do sense it runs quite hot anything on the market to help this problem. Question would super unleaded or similar help with this !! What difference does it make is it good / bad ??

On another note a cars thermostat will open from 88c and run at nearly 90c so this could be normal running temperature
I did think weak mixture but the plugs look spot on.
So if anyone is going for a ride today can you see if you can touch the engine case after a good spin ?

I assume it's just how they run as I have now covered several thousand mile on mine and still the same .

I'll put my temperature probe on mine sometime and see what it says, but it has always run VERY hot, the engine is usually still warm for over a hour after getting home from work.

One thing I have noticed with all my SD's over the years is that my 250 deluxe does seem to run the coolest out of all of them.
What I mean is, the header pipes have never 'bronzed' as much on this one as any of the others - and they all had the genuine double skinned pipes.
I am quite sure it's all to do with the carb settings / possible air leaks etc.

(not disagreeing that carbs not set up correctly will make run even hotter.)

I heard somewhere years ago that the guy in Honda who designed the SD had survived the Korean war where he was stationed in some remote area and he had to resort to cooking food on the cylinder head of his army motorbike to make it safe to eat. He never forgot the experience and when he got ahead in life he decided to give everyone that option!
