So i heard on the radio this morning that 'back in the 80's' (well before i was born..) there was many sub-cultures in music and one of them was a heavy or heavies? And he described these 'heavies' to own a 250 superdream and listen to the likes of deep purple, black sabbath, motorhead etc which is right up my street! But looking through the 80s music and videos section there is a lot of embarrassing videos and songs far from hard rock?! Now i say 'embarrassing' but i am a young (24) rocker and my dad insists it 'was different back then' and it was ok to like that stuff? So what do you lot listen to now and has it changed from back in the day? Biz the 80`s was my era and they are referring to Heavy Metal music which was massive in the 80`s bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple had been around for years even then but there was a new wave of British Heavy Metal like Iron Maiden, Saxon etc. As well as a lot of groups from the States like Wasp, Metallica, Anthrax plus a lot of glamour metal like Europe, Bon Jovi. They were basically sub cultures within the Heavy Metal genre. I still love Heavy Metal and have the Metallica tattoo to prove it In the 80`s Mods had made a comeback, skinheads were also a big thing (watch This is England and you'll get the idea) punks were still around too. Then the shit your referring to was New Romantics like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode who dressed like big jessies. Now I listen to everything from Heavy Metal, folk music, blue grass, ska as well as more up to date stuff like Mumford & Sons, Snow Patrol and anything else that catches me ear. The 80`s was a great era there doesn't seem to be the same sub cultures about now. I got my 1st Superdream in 1991 and chopped it as I was into chops and heavy metal at the time. Heavy Metal is probably why I got into bikes originally

When I were a lad i listened to Meatloaf, Rainbow, Quo, Suzi Quatro, Joan Jett et al. But I also listened to The Specials, Madness, Spandau, Duran, Adam and the Ants, Bay City Rollers, Shakin Stevens, Mozart, Bizet, Beethoven ( I was doing a Music 'o' level!) I like all kinds of music, provided its tuneful and contains a story. I was never allowed a bike but used to go around with a mate who had a RD250lc until it was clear my sister was not going to go out with him, then he dropped me! My mother would never let me have a bike and was disgusted when I passed my test 20 yrs ago. I fell in love with the idea of the SD because one of the guys at work rode one, well crashed one just after I started. I used to ride around in a Mark one Escort which was sooo much better for entertaining the ladies on the back seat I mainly dressed like a teddy boy with a quiff and tight trousers and brown leather jacket, ala the Fonz and stated in another thread. Then I grew my hair longer (mullet stylee) until I was mistaken for a girl whilst out riding my horse one day, then it was a flat top for years after!

Heavy Metal music originated in the late 60's and through the 1970's as an 'antidote' to the hippy culture.
I was completely into bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath while at senior school in the 70's. Couldnt stomach the bland fare that was being played on Radio 1 - mostly Motown - and it drove my folks nuts!!!
Still listen to it today, if I am in the mood for it, but mostly I have mellowed into a Classical music sort - Classic FM is the default station in the car and workshop.
I guess it is an age thing.............
PS - I did have the bone for Kim Wilde in the 80's though.......................
