According to DVLA, your plate needs to be at the rear of the bike. It doesn't specify where on the rear. I can't find any official rule on your light. I can see it causing hassle with some mot testers though as they may claim it can't be seen by vehicles approaching from the rear right hand side as it is obscured by your rear wheel.
Personally I wouldn't risk it, If you did get pulled and had a jobsworth officer you could get done for small plate, evading detection by camera, incorrect style of plate and possibly incorrect positioning of brake light. This could come with the equivalent of a GV9, meaning you can't ride your bike away. If they were really fussy then you could be done for your light not being type approved.

Ok gheggy thanks I think I'm going to have to look into this a little more, as for the black plate and size I rode around for years on my Harley but would like to get the side mounting bit looked into thanks

What would be the advantages of side mounting the number plate?
I think it looks nicer in the middle, maybe put two old red railway lanterns each side as extra back lights!

I was led to believe that it must be on the right hand side and near the back as pos. I have made the mounting so the rear light is quite high so can be seen from the left over the mudguard, was easier on my Bob cos it has been hardtailed so less problem finding a mounting point. If I could put pics up I could show you my "work of art!"

Just found this on the web so it looms like my question is answered.
DVLA Rules for Motorcycle and Tricycle number plates All motorcycles and tricycles must display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle. Motorcycles and tricycles registered before 1st September 2001 may display a number plate at the front of the vehicle but are not required to. If you have a two or three wheeled motorcycle or tricycle that has a body type of a four-wheeled vehicle, you MUST display a number plate at the front and back of the vehicle. Two and three-line number plates: Motorcycles registered on or after 1st September 2001 must display a two-line number plate. Motorcycles registered before 1st September 2001 may display a three-line number plate. One-line number plates are illegal, regardless of the date of registration. Here are the character sizes:

Just had a very pleasant hour talking bikes with the very likeable Terryc,he has taken a couple of pics of my homemade no plate mounting-made from a hospital chequer plate bed foot clip board, which he will post for you to peruse. I have NOt yet taken the bike for an MOT but did show the man a pic of it when i tested one of my other bikes earlier this year and he seemed to be fine with it. The light is actually lower than I thought it was ,I intended it to be visible from left side too,but it isn't. Pretty sure my mates new Rocket 3 came with a similar number plate mounting arrangement to mine.
