Yep,and they seem to just make up the amount of the top of their heads. Bought a guitar for $600 and the duty was £40,bought a wah pedal for $95 and the duty was ........£40! Other times it has ranged from 2% to the 80% I paid on the wah! Totally dont get it !

Also the goods can be tied up for weeks at customs,my mate waited 6 weeks for a guitar to be cleared. Other times I have had stuff arrive in 6 days

If it's from the US ask the seller to mark it as a gift...no import duty. I know 'cause I did it!

I used to ask them to do that Gordy and it did not use to be a problem...... But I think more of them are reluctant to do that now as I think they can get pulled up in it, especially if it's a business. The Americans are extremely law abiding - if you can find someone still willing to do it, it's a bonus. Import / customs duty on an 18 dollar mudguard would not be much - but it depends how much the shipping is as I think they apply the duty to that as well.

Yeah Fungo you are probably right, the last time I got an item from the states marked as a gift was about 4 years ago, they may well have tightened the law since. I think I'm right in saying you don't pay import duty for items bought outside the EU for less than £135.

Yes, depends on the item code the sender puts on the customs declaration- but low cost items escape import duty. But everything gets the dreaded VAT added. And finally UK Parcelforce need compensating for collecting these duties, and they and the government have decided it's you that foots this fee as well. Annoying....
