I would be grateful if anyone can identify the shock on the right of the picture. Its not a Superdream item, the shock body is approx 28mm in Diameter and the piston is 9mm, compared with the SD's 32mm & 10mm rod, it also has no slot in the top of the Rod. Thanks.

Not sure without measuring or doing some research but maybe off a 250/400T ? There may not be any difference so don't quote me on it.

According to cmsnl they have different part numbers and are also massively different in price so I stick to my initial theory

I'd agree with Cheggers. The dream damper is indeed narrower with no slot. I have one in my spares.

Interesting to note that the springs were the same on both dream and superdream.

Thanks for that, I'll go and study the parts diagram for the T.

Something new crops up constantly with these bikes. My bike had Koni shocks fitted at the dealers in 1977 so this is a topic that is new to me. I always assumed the only difference in the dream and superdream fvqs was the chrome cap.

Yes, there were more differences in the engine between CB400T and CB400N than I realised as well. For the rear shocks- it was a selling point for the Superdream over the Dream- can't find the test article I wanted to, but CMM in 2007 repeated the difference in rear suspension thus:-

And they are a right bugger to get apart without that darn slot.

Not something I would want to pursue to put on a Superdream then , cmsnl / DSS are listing it at £200 or about the same for a complete shock. Anyone know someone doing a 250/400T Restoration? Many thanks to all, for your help.

Cheggy me ol' mate - you might just as well have the whole shebang that I have here then if they are for your bike (as opposed to just the tops). FOC - they will be no good to me............. I did too at one stage - then around a year ago sussed the different damper and ring size. Carl, are yours SD items? The ones you skanked from me? Not that it matters as they will fit as complete assemblies but Cheggs is getting rather fussy in his old age.

I have an immaculate set of SD ones fitted at the minute, I just wanted to fit chrome tops to replicate the original spec.

FB - The ones I got from you ARE SD shocks....and very nice they are too!!! They will be going on the Cafe....
The chrome topped fellers I picked up off fleabay a couple of years back. Stripped them down for cleaning and just havent put them back together again.
I have a set of the repro-FVQ's that are now available on RMM, so the chrome toppers are surplus.
Glad to help in any way I can Cheggs!!!
PS - You might want to get them re-chromed mate......just to get them to the high standard that the rest of the bike is at. They aint mingin - just a tad pitted - but it would be a shame to spoil the rest of the bike.
