The subject of cleaning out old fuel tanks seems to crop up on here now and again, with Evaporust being a popular but pricey choice. This bloke claims his alternative is one tenth the price, and equally effective, and doesn't lose its power over subsequent usage as Evaporust does. The vid shows how to make it and then runs through a testing program on his rust remover formula. I've used brick acid in the past with good results, but should the need arise in the future I think I'll give this a try.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVYZmeReKKY&ab_channel=BeyondBallistics

This article is a great find, and for anyone considering clearing a tank out, one word of warning. These solutions are water based and must be cleaned, and most importantly, dried off thoroughly after use. However, Mr Honda has inadvertently caused us a big problem. The Superdream tank is designed with a lip under the filler lid to prevent liquid ( petrol) getting out, and a similar lipped tray around the top of the fuel tap to hold sediment away from the tap itself. The result is that they are almost impossible to clean out. My best answer has been to use absorbant paper on a stick, warm air blown in, then swilling out with a fast evaporating substance like acetate or panel wipe. Forget or miss this step and very bad things happen. Do not think that adding oily petrol will kill this effect. It has recently been tried, with the loss of the tank π In conclusion, the most effective way to fix a known rusty tank is to cut a small triangular flap in the underneath of the tank on both sides. Send it for commercial acid dipping with the flaps allowing full drainage. Immediately both weld up the holes, spray a temporary primer on the outside to stop corrosion and seal the tank. It then will naturally need a full repaint. Other options are available. I often talk shit.... Oh, and I still think this article is great, but perhaps not on tanks without some planning π

As an afterthought, the deceased tank I have as a decal pattern shall later be dissected. I will cut it open and take pictures if these evil little traps so we can all see and better understand what we are dealing with.
