Hi,
Does anyone have any tips for how to stop my plugs fouling up?
The bike seems very sensitive to the cleanliness of its plugs, and they go black within a few miles.
Thanks.

That should not happen. Could be the mixture being wrong at best and running too rich. At worst could be burning oil due to various worn parts, such as bores or valves. Did you do the rebuild?

Had a similar problem on Gill's 125. Compression ok as it had been rebored & new pistons. I thought the spark looked weak & got new coils but it was still sooty on one cylinder. Ended up going one size up in main jet and moving the needle one notch before finally ran ok. Good luck!

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. Could I just move the needle one notch down to make the mixture weaker, or would this not work?
What about the idle mixture screw?
Finally, I'm not completely sure that the choke flap on the right-hand carb is COMPLETELY open when the choke knob is pushed right in, because there is some play in the linkage that connects the two choke spindles together. Would a small deflection of the choke flap make the mixture significantly richer?

It's certainly worth playing with the choke flaps & dropping the needles a notch. I tried a lot of things & not sure which order I did it. It would start running on the left cylinder only, but both plugs were sooty, so I stripped & cleaned the carbs, checked & adjusted the float heights, played with the mixture screws and replaced the coils. I think the next step was to drop both needles a notch. The left plug was looking ok by this stage but the right was still sooty & that's when I changed the RH main jet & it was ok after that.

Hi,
Thanks for this advice; its really useful.
Could you tell me how you specified the larger RH jet, and where you got it from?
Thank.

Does the bike run ok or is it running roughly /rich ? Just wondering if the rubber plugs in the carbs are in place/sealing correctly ?
They do run horribly without them , I didn't think they looked very useful......

I just looked up the jet size in the workshop manual & searched for the next number. Unfortunately the manual & all the invoices went with the bike so I've no reference now.

Hi,
I don't recall there being any rubber plugs in my carbs. Could you tell me what you mean exactly please?
Regards,
