Hi all, re: 1979 400N 13.800 miles
Went out today for a quick run. Pulled off the drive no problem but got halfway up the road and couldn't engage gears, like a box of false neutrals. The clutch seems to be ok and the gear selector moves as normal. Stopped the bike and managed to find 1st then second but it wouldn't pull away, then couldn't find neutral. Then managed to find 1st 2nd and 3rd and managed to get home. The gear selector seems to move ok but it just won't select a gear up or down. Then sometimes it does. I had a blue 250 back it the 80's with a similar issue in that it got stuck it second gear whilst I was out but the shop were I brought it from did the repair. When I asked what happed they just said.... Oh, a screw fell out. Great.
Would be grateful for any ideas.
Many thanks & Best regards

I find it unlikely that a 'screw' would have dropped out? sounds a bit like bike shop bullsh*t to me I suppose one of the two bolts (circled in blue) could have come loose? pray its not the one holding the plate on the end of the selector drum. while your there, check the little pins behind that plate havent been bent and abused. the other thing to check is the selector shaft and its gubbins, it should have very little play in the hinged joint and a fairly soft spring to keep it engaged with those pesky little selector pins, circled in red finally check that the gear lever return spring is correctly fitted and, important bit, pushed fully home onto its mounting, red arrow
