Hi all, I may need to replace the original exhaust collector box on my '79 400N. Overall it's in good condition but has developed a small hole. Not sure if it's worth asking around for a repair or just replacing it. Has anyone had any dealings with the David Silver replacements and do the two chrome protectors still fit.
Best regards and thanks you.

If the hole is small then get it brazed, welding could be problematical due to thin metal where the arc can burn additional holes where you want to repair, give it a good scrubbing with a wire brush to discover any other problem areas. repair/braze as required an give it all a good coat of heatproof paint. silver repros are just hollow shells and aren't much good other than looking the part. A decently repaired item will extend the life but keep an eye on the clamping petals, they get very thin in places

I used JB Weld High Heat putty for a small hole on the welded joint on the collector box and has worked well.

Like Dave & Alfie, I think you should be able to repair it. Brazing would be best, but I've got a tatty old mig set, so I managed to weld the old aftermarket box on my 400NA years ago & it's still ok. The box on my 250NB was beyond fixing, so I got one of the HiLevel copies that Silvers sells & it fitted ok & the nos heat shields went on it ok. They're hollow inside, no baffles like the original collector box.

Thank you for the reply. I think I will probably go down the brazing route.
