Bought a 1981 CB400NB in October 2023 and have started renovations as a winter project. It had been standing since 1992 so lots of external corrosion. The engine bores looked clean and it turned over easily so I changed the oil and added new fuel and the engine started and ran though it wouldn't pick up on the throttle. New carbs jets and a thorough clean on the 'to do' list. Had some parts rechromed by Chromefix (Birmingham) - the price was eyewatering but the quality is absolutely excellent, including dent removal on the exhaust box covers. The fuel tank leaks at the rear corners so strip and seal on the list. The wheels have cleaned up nicely and I've fitted new tyres (Avon Roadside Mk2) and tubes. I've had the frame, swinging arm and some parts grit blasted and powder coated and they've come out very well. New steering bearings fitted and fork leg cleaning and polishing is underway. Haven't yet decided on the repaint colour though I like the Tanzanite blue - the choice may well be driven by availability of a decal set to match.
Does anybody have any tips for removing the carb jets - the screwdriver slots look pretty mangled before I start work?

Thanks for the welcome, guys, and to daveh for the link to the excellent carb site. Progress has slowed down as it's been cold in my garage but I've overhauled the forks, polished the sliders (very corroded so took ages), replaced the steering bearings and put the forks back on the bike. I had some 15w fork oil so I've put that in and we'll see what that is like on the road. I've started on the brake calipers and used a screw-in nipple and grease gun to push the old, corroded and very seized pistons out - worked a treat. Clean up the calipers, paint and fit the new pistons and seals next. I'll post some pictures when I work out how to do it!
I failed to take a pre-strip photograph of the brake hose assembly where the 'splitter' and a bracket mount to the lower yolk and it's not clear to me from the various schematics how it goes back together. Does anybody have a photo of that area, please?

Pictures not very good, but the lower yoke fork clamp bolts go through the mounting holes on either side of the bracket so the bracket sits forward & above the clamp bolts.

I was confused by that question and answer, but then saw it's a 400, so must be a splitter for the twin discs! Don't have such issues on the humble 250!

Fitting the twin disk set up to the 250 was a popular upgrade, although it meant getting quite a few parts. I fitted a later twin piston calliper to my 250 & although it also needed a 400 disk which is smaller than the 250 disk, I still thought it had a bit more stopping power

Ian,
Do you mean a twin piston rather than twin disk? Looking at the photo it seems to be twin piston.

yep, twin piston calliper from a later model. There's a few variations that can be used - can't remember what mine was off, but it needed a 400 disk to get it to fit.

Thanks all for the welcome and help. I've started a new thread to cover the renovation so won't now reply to this one: 1981 CB400NB Superdream Renovation-winter project
