I've had 3 Superdreams, my 400NA which I've had for nearly 20 years now. and the balance chain adjustment has always worked as it should. Then came my 250NB, and on that bike the adjustment didn't work, I had to do it by estimating the play in the 400NA chain & setting the 250 as close to that as I could. Next was the 400N and on that bike, the adjustment didn't work until the quadrant was pushed up & down a few times which seemed to free it off & it would spring into position. When the 250NB engine was rebuilt, it turned out the spring had come adrift. With a new spring fitted, the adjustment worked fine - for the next few times, then packed up & it was back to doing it manually again. Anyway, it's time for the 400NA service & first job was the balance chain. Last time I did it, there was only a little bit of the quadrant showing so I thought I might have to move it this time. With the inspection cap off & lock not slackened, the spring didn't move the quadrant, so off with the side cover to rotate the quadrant on the splined shaft. With the lock nut removed, I could see the quadrant wasn't against the stop When I rotated the quadrant onto the next spline to increase the gap. the shaft seemed to tighten up & I couldn't move it with my finger, let alone the spring. No idea why, but when I moved back a spline to where it was, it worked fine with the spring pressure & without the locknut in place I could see there's plenty space left in the adjustment slot - probably enough to outlast me, so it'll do for me

Hello Ian auto chain adjusters are a pain some with catastrophic circumstances on some engines and I am not taking just about motorcycle engines.the good thing about the superdream engine it can rattle like a good one telling you to get the tool box out.about 12 years now I would see a silver 250 on the road .then I see the bike at the oak bike night .I stood looking at the bike it was all there except for aftermarket silencers. Then he started it up I have never heard ennythink rattle so much .I told him how to ajust the chains and told him about the superdream forum but I met up again and he had adjusted the chains .what a difference .he as had the bike from new and all people would say to him they adjust themselves

I remember Dave Hagon, motorcycle engineer & technical inspector for the TT, telling me that back in the day he used to set the balance chain adjustment by sound - it was more reliable & accurate. Wish I'd got him to show me that trick! Honda came up with a much better system on the CB250RS. The chain is much stronger & you slacken the lock nut to let the spring do it's job, then back the quadrant off by one index mark.
