Hi Guys. I have a spare 400 engine that came with my project bike. I had intended to rebuild it and either keep as a spare or maybe one day build it into a bike. However, I don't think that is going to happen any time soon, space is very limited and I'm sick to death of falling over the blessed thing! As you can see from the pics, it's top-end dismantled but as far as I can tell, it's complete apart from :- No carbs. No stator. 1 x valve missing. I apologise in advance if there's anything else, but I'm as sure as I can be. I've no idea what to ask for it but £100 seems ok to me if anyone on here is interested. You would need to be able to collect from Lincoln area. Thanks in advance. Al.

This is a middle of the run 400N engine so should have a kick start

interesting, Pete's right that would have originally had a kickstarter, there is a thuggish (risky) way of removing them without splitting the cases but I'd guess someones been into that engine before.
I'd give it a bit of time on here for members to see it but if no one else wants it I'll buy it off you

Well, that's piqued my interest now. I used to have a 400 kicker back in the day but it was brand new si never had cause to take it apart. I had always assumed that the kickers and non-kickers had different cases. I'll have a closer look, if only to enlighten myself!

This is what to look for
shame if it’s been bastardised as the kicker engines are more desirable hence my comment

Well, there's definitely no shaft in there and no corresponding hole in the side cover. Not sure what that tells us. I doubt that your information is wrong, so the kicker shaft must have been removed and the cover changed at some point??

Thanks Paul. You obviously got home safely and didn't run in the back of any tractors while admiring the view . It was great to meet you and finally put a face to the name. Hope you manage to do something exciting with the engine.

someones definitely had this apart before, inlet valve spring is a dead give away one barrel came up ok, the other is no good but I have an old pair with the same issue so I'll make one good set out of the two ugh! and remember all, if you dont own a torque wrench just use your largest breaker bar, it'll be fine. the bridge piece that clamps the crank was just a bit tight early and later type balance weights, more an observation than a problem the only real issue is this bolt, fingers crossed theres enough meat on the casing to get a timesert in all in all though I'm pretty happy its dirty but largely serviceable

Good Luck, indeed Ian!
I can 100% plead innocent on all counts though. Judging by the 'barrel and a half' of crude oil in there, it's a while since anyone was in there.
I'm totally confident that it's in the right hands though 👍
