Spotted this lot on a ride to Peel today The bikes were all on a ride out together & most have L or R plates. The unusual bit was they were mostly in their teens & twenties, apart from a couple of their dads. You just don't see many young riders these days. It is easier - and cheaper - here than over there. You can get a provisional license at 16, covering both cars & bikes. For a bike, you'll need to do a CBT & be restricted to 125cc. Getting a full license means passing the relevant theory and practical tests for bike of car. Once you've got your full bike license, you can ride any capacity bike, but are limited to 50mph & must display an R plate - this applies to both car or bike licenses. Still a lot more involved than when I started riding - get a provisional license, stick an L plate on a 250 & off you go. And if your happy on a 250, you can forget about passing your test for 10 years

Interesting picture Ian
The bike to the right has no dash on the plate before the last letter and also no IoM legs on it
You hardly ever see L plates in UK now

Not sure about number plate with no dash now, most have one but not all & much the same with the IOM Legs. My 400NA didn't have either when I got it many years ago, like a lot of vehicles back then, but most of the plate suppliers these days have their system set up to print them with the dash & the Legs. Funny thing about L plates over there - I've seen a few in Bala. A while back we followed a couple of bikes along the A494. one of which had an L plate & was going well, overtaking a couple of slower cars. When we parked up by the lake I went up to the lad & said his bike was going well for a 125 - turns out he was 16 and it was a '50cc' - dad had done a bit of tuning! This year, again parked up at the lake was a lovely AJS 125 with an L plate. A dad was out with his daughter who had just passed her CBT & another time, a family turned up on bikes, Dad was riding with his younger daughter pillion. Her sister was on her own bike & so was mum - younger daughter will get one when she's old enough!

Nice to see a group of young riders gives me hope for the future of bikes even if they will be potentially electric 🤟

It'll have to be youngsters when all bikes are electric - they'll be too heavy for us old gits
