Hi Guys! I'm a newbie here. Just picked up my dream and it's been a dream I've had since I first laid eyes on one when at college in Esher as a 17 year-old in 1980. I live in Sweden today and they actually turn up quite often over here at reasonable prices (paid £600 for mine) and it's done a genuine 20,000 miles. Got a small weaping of petrol from the tank, but other than that it's sorted. Love to hear what you guys think. All the best//Marc

That's a really nice looking SD Marc, and a bit of a bargain at that price! Hope you can sort the weeping tank without too much hassle.

Many thanks Ian! There's actually another one up in Stockholm (a blue 1981) with only 9,000 miles for the same price and it's a looker. Thinking about using a tank sealer on my SD but understand it has to be done properly. Really want to keep this as original as possible.

It’s worth looking at Duffers threads on repairing tanks - I assume the weep is by the petrol tap side at the rear

Many thanks for the great tip Pete. Had a look at Duffer's thread and was very educational. You've now got me thinking about soldering it instead of welding. But, I need to understand how big the hole is first. Once again, many thanks. This is all new to me, but hell that's what makes this whole SD experience so much fun and interesting.

£600 is amazing for that! Are all vintage bikes much cheaper in Sweden?

Hi Daveh - yep - there's a blue cb250n from 1981 with a genuine 9,000 miles on the clock in mint condition for £625, but it's up North of Stockholm which is about 550km away from me otherwise I would have bought that one instead.

I wonder what the import duty and shipping would cost to UK. Seems SDs are the only thing cheaper in Sweden from my trips there. Beer, food, clothes, etc...really pricey. Why are older bikes cheap there...is there no interest in them or is it just SDs no one wants? You could make a bit of money exporting to UK.

Yes it can be quite expensive to buy everyday things here like beer:) But seriously, you've got 1) a lousy Swedish krona against most other currencies 2) They don't have the same nostaligic view of 250 SD's as my generation has i.e. I was 17 in 1980 and the SD was for me, as it was for many of us, our first big bike. If it hadn't of been for Brexit I would definitely have a business going with these, but import costs for Brits are likely to be prohibitive - or am I wrong there maybe??

Looks like it's not as bad as I first thought when it comes to import duty i.e. according to one source: 'Any motor vehicle over 30 years old is automatically eligible for import duty relief and a reduced rate of VAT'.

It’s not the cost
In 2018 I bought a bike in Germany on eBay, arranged a courier who dropped it to my house
I then went on the gov.uk website and did the Nova
Nowadays you can’t do the Nova yourself - you have to have an accredited customs agent - the import papers are long winded

Seems £600 for a bike that would be at least double that in UK was worth considering. Based on your user name vintageleo, is it Leo? If you're in the south of Sweden are you near Malmo? Then you could ride across the bridge to Copenhagen and then down through Germany, over to France and home to UK via tunnel on the bike...that would test the bike's condition! Enjoy the bike, Dave.
