i will never get things done .went to my mams to make sure all was fine then back home to get a shift in but the phone rings ,mark i can't get the gl3 to start for them that do not know its a 1946 matchless.he told me it has a good spark and with a shot of carb cleaner it tries.i told him to take the carb of and i will pick up .they are a simple carb but they all work the same ,strip down and in the cleaner modern fuel is not a good friend to these old amal's .but guess what the pilot side blocked solid ,99% of bad starting and running problems its the pilot side this old carb a easy fix but like the superdream i have got 4 to do on the cb750 when i am in the mood

Mark Do you mean the pilot internal Air holes? My 250n is running sweet once warmed up, but struggles to start up cold on or off choke and seems to not be firing evenly. Once over that initial warm up all is well and starts and runs just fine. Any thoughts on that?

I agree with Mark, they are a sod to get clean and its hard to tell if they are clean as they are pressed in (moronic bit of design) under those rubber bungs. if you scout around on youtube theres a tutorial about how to get them out (from memory cx500 carbs) and I did something similar with my own 400 thing. I have to say though that removal is not recommended, they actually fit quite softly and it doesnt take much force to extract them, do it too many times and you'll lose the fit. it did occur to me that 400a carbs would probably be a nice upgrade for a 250 engine but its one of those ideas that I'v thunk of but never tried

I'm wondering if the starting issue is anything to do with the pilot jets (or indeed even the carbs). The reason is that after a couple of minutes warming up on tick over the engine runs fine and starts again fine. It's just a pig to start from cold. If it was the carb blocked anywhere wouldn't it still have problems when warm? Could it be the choke not closing off enough air? The only other thing that changed was the magneto stator. The old one used to fail on start up when hot, but started first press when cold!! Now with a second hand stator I cured the previous issue and have this new issue!!!

Having thought about this starting issue a bit more I decided maybe it could be a simple issue (always tackle the simple ones first?). So tweaked the mixture screws. They were set at 2 1/2 full turns out, but running was on the lean side, although looked spot on and ran great. Turned out to 3 full turns to get a bit richer mix and starts perfectly now. Now I will see how it runs and a bit concerned it won't run as sweetly as before. Wazzbo's guide says 2 turns out, so 3 seems a bit much. What settings are others finding? I know it can vary from engine to engine.

The two turns from closed is only the initial "get you in the ballpark setting" the attached shows the next step in the carb set up procedure.. Your carbs won't be fitted with limiter caps that's only a U.S.thing.
