Hi folks, for anyone who’s replaced this part which way did you go? Get a metal one and refurb it or a fibreglass one? Pros/cons going either way? Thanks for any replies.

If the rusty one is yours, it is a good one and worth fixing. Wire wheel out, tap out the captive nuts. Jobs a good un.

Not mine Duffer, my bike doesn’t have one but that’s the one I’m looking at buying. Just wondered if anyone had tried the fibreglass one. I think I’d prefer the metal one.

In that case, buy the metal one. First, it took over 40 years to look like that, and it is still OK. Second, it is a bit structural because it supports the rear light assembly, and fibre glass is not as rigid as steel.

Yeah I’ve went for that one, I figured metal one would be a bit sturdier.

I bought a pattern metal one off ebay last year for £33. Good quality, but was not a perfect fit. Had a couple of holes out of positio by a small amount, a mmm or so, but got to fit ok. The original on my bike was rusted through beyond reasonable repair.

Yes Ian that one looks good (maybe the one Daveh mentions) and I think I did see them but thought they were fibreglass or I’d have got one. I bought the metal one in my post for £20 so happy enough. Nice easy job to make it bonny, sort of job we like.
A member also offered me one but I’d already moved. I’ll be looking for a few bits and bobs (well lots of bits and bobs) 😃 so I think I’ll ask on here first, let us help each other before I look elsewhere.
Thanks
