I am always looking out for engines, not that I buy them, but just to see how much they are fetching.
I am amazed at some of the prices asked for serious shit!
I have a 250 kicker SuperDream engine that has been recetly aquired, along with a 400 frame (another post).
My Q is this,
What would You pay for a good running tidy looking engine, whether it be a 250 or a 400.
I am not talking about the engine I have but curious as to find out how much money you would part with to aquire one.
These are all dependent on condition and the incidentals that come with them, you all know the script when buying items like this.
(I mention kicker as most of my bikes are, expect ORH)
I will start it off.
For a 250 engine kicker £250-£300
For a 400 engine kicker £300 to £400.
Gee.

The trouble with engines is demand
For a certified engine you are probably in the ball park
I have under my bench a BSA C15 engine - you see them at autojumbles for £500 - realistically it’s worth £300

odd one this but I wouldnt give more than £150 for a 250 engine (not bothered about a kicker as they can easily be converted)
400 engine all depends, an early one £250, a later one with the external oil feed to the head and a full power cam I might go as far as £500, worth mentioning the 450's too, I'd give up to £350 for one of those as I'd have to leave a budget for a proper gearbox

as for anything second hand the only monetary value thats set in stone is its scrap value and that can change daily.what you value a item and what someone will give you can be very conflicting.when i put something up for sale which is very rare i start at what i want if it sells great if not i leave it at that.engines what are you getting if not seen and heard running may be as bad as the one you are replacing ,would take the stranger word its a good one mate as you part with £500.as with the superdream the market for parts is a small niche market as with bikes over 20 year old most do not want to throw hundreds of pounds on them .i found out it was far cheaper years ago to replace than rebuild a vehicle engine but thats when they were readily available .but time turns things round that what once abundant is no more.the superdream engine Gee may be worth £500 or more the problem is finding someone that wants the engine that much
