MOT?

There has been a bit of reference to MOT's in recent posts. Question, as most of our SD's are now under the 40 year rule so that they are tax and MOT exempt, what is the reason folk are getting bikes MOT'd? Is it because you need MOT to get insurance? Not got to that stage yet with my SD, but hopefully will not be too long before it is ready for the road, so need to know the score.

it is still a good idea to get them checked, as you may miss something, and you have still got to make sure its roadworthy, although the roads need a mot as well.

Yes agree it is a good idea to have a third party check for being roadworthy, but was interested in need for insurance or not. Not sure what the MOT really brings to it apart from the obvious tyres, brakes and lights. Agree about the roads. They don't seem to care how dangerous the potholes can be!

I have worked a while with insurance companies and they already know from your registration that the bike is MOT exempt. They then adjust their risk factor (and price) accordingly. A bit like the life insurance application that asks your occupation. A fork lift truck driver may struggle to get insurance. His twin brother accountant wouldn't.

I have found that limited mileage policies on bikes over 25 years old are cheap as chips, my policy covers two bikes, including the SD, that are not even finished and on the road. It cost me nothing to get them on the policy and it now has 5 bikes on it fully comp. It should come down this year again as the youngest bike on it turns 25 and this is the only one that seems to affect the premium much!

I use my 250 regularly and is no show bike and it was first registered in 1981 so fromApril ( if my memory serves me well ) last year I got an historic V5 and is zero charge road tax and no mot necessary but especially as I use it regularly I think still putting the bike through an mot is a good thing may be a life saver
