Story in telegraph yesterday about worst country for motorbike deaths! Togo in Africa. Is it any wonder! Apparently most accidents are caused by bikes crashing into each other?

Incredible! I notice dad's wearing a helmet, but wife & kids have to risk it.

It seems that only the person riding the bike wears a helmet and any passenger's take their chances?

When I used to travel to India for work back in 2007 the law stated the rider in charge had to wear a helmet but not the passengers I think it was back in the early 70's that the helmet law came in UK, is that about right? I think there was some protest about it at the time, due to enforcing self protection (a bit like the seatbelt law for cars). It was before I started riding back in late 70's, no never experience helmetless riding. Don't intend to start either! Although I would never contemplate not having helmet protection, it's an interesting debate about what governments should or should not dictate in regard to self protection as opposed to protection of third parties who might be injured as a result of your actions.

back in 2003 I was travelling round Turkey and discovered you could hire motorbikes, right thinks I, I'm having one of those, so set off to explore the area around marmaris on a honda dominator. I took full advantage of the no helmet law (the hirers do try to insist you take one, which is fair enough) and it really is a different experience, had an amazing ride out to Datca one day, right along the ridge of a peninsula, with hardly any traffic (turkish road rules take some getting your head around) enjoyed a nice lunch on a deserted beach and all was good.
next day I headed out of marmaris in the other direction and found myself on a busy main road, at this point I really regretted not having a crash helmet, un-governed juggernauts bearing down on you and overtaking (turkish tarmac has crap grip on a bike) you with inches to spare is really no fun.
I'v sort of got a foot in both camps on this one but I'd prefer to have the choice

Yes I agree, choice is always best. I know what you mean about roads and driving in Turkey. I travel there a lot for work, but have only driven. Once drove through Istanbul in rush hour and that's not something I want to repeat. I would never chance Istanbul traffic on a bike even if it was caged in crash bars!

I started riding at 16 in 1967 before any talk of a helmet law. I might nip down to the shop for some fags or a short test ride after fixing something on the bike, and would give a friend a lift without one, but wouldn't think of going to work or a ride myself without one, nor did any of the older lads we knocked about with.

As a child around 7 years I used to help clean my neighbours moped and as payment he used to let me sit on the rear fuel tank and we’d return pop bottles to the corner shop for a penny and he let me keep the penny , I never wore a helmet and neither did he , great great memories , can’t imagine not wearing an helmet now though I do wear an open face helmet on a warm sunny day at low speed rides and love it

I too remember taking pop bottles back to the shop for a penny, it's how I earned my 'spends'
