I have the opportunity to buy a 400 as a project rebuild and will be viewing it this weekend.
Although it looks reasonably good in the photographs I have viewed, and is said to run well, is there anything in particular I should be looking at before parting with the readies. I am an experienced biker but have little knowledge of this model. Are there any particular areas that are considered problematic or any replacement parts that may be difficult to find?
Thanks, in anticipation of replies.

Best thing to do is post up the pictures. Let's have a look with you. Running is a good sign though. That's more than most of us get.

Compared to Brit bikes a Dream is a dream to work on. Worst aspects for me were seized engine mounting bolts and the centre stand pivot. The starter motor mounting bolts were also seized and were replaced. The front brake caliper is a pain to refurbish if the seals are leaking and I swapped the master cylinder for a new one from ' Superdream parts' on eBay who are a good source of new and used parts. You can refurbish the master cylinder but at £30 for a new one it was not worth it. It is quite difficult to bleed the front brake system so some kind of vacuum device at the bleed nipple end might help. Good used brake calipers are hard to find especially for the later NC model. Silvers stock a lot of parts but at premium prices. Dennis

Thanks, in anticipation of replies. It all depends on what your plans are for it. And what needs replacing. But I would say a running smokeless revving 400 is always worth a buy, all price dependent. (If unsure about a running 400, ask Duffer or see his 400 fibber post). Most mechanical parts are readily available unless you are going for a full engine rebuild, then certain needed things are scarce. But to have a running 400 SuperDream is always a good start. Show us some pics first, someone might recognise it. Gee.
