Update. Its not the coil, its not the air mixture screws unless they are gubbed.
Its not the rectifier, It was fresh fuel that was put in.
Having the bike collected tomorrow night and dropped off at the house, It must be carb related.
Question, the wire that is under the tank, that when pulled apart lets you start the bike without keys, what is it that it removes, just the ignition barrel circuit?
Cheers.

400 Dream now in someone's garage after breaking down on Saturday. I think it the coil, it's a new one but not original. Plus air mixture screw needs adjusting, plug on the near side coking up. Plug on the offside, nadda.... It did coke up initially but the just smelled of fuel. A very weak spark now and again. I have two original coil packs to try with. Plus taking a cdi box and a rectifier that I know work. Will update tomorrow night. Gee. Ps, first time in 40 years I have ever broken down on a motorbike. Sorry to hear of you once in a lifetime miss fortune Graeme, though I'm not entirely convinced of the efficacy of the advice in the attached picy, as an owner operator of Keihin carbs I thoroughly understand the sentiment..

the black and white wire is the only link between the ignition circuit and the main loom

That's the problems with old things Paul, they need fettling with. The other one is going into the garage tomorrow to get the tappets done, I have tried twice going by the book, certainly quieter but still far too loud.
The pic did make me laugh 🤣 Gee

Bad luck about the breakdown but it will give you something to do :-). Nice looking bike but judging by your garage you have a serious bike addiction - and no known cure IMHO! Dennis

Update to the update. I took the carbs off.( I wish I had taken pics but was in shock) The secondary jets were sitting in and around the float bowl, the small inner brass spacer was in the float bowl. Primary jets were fine apart from 72 jets in them, 250 jets in a 400. Should be 78. The secondary jets were 105, I can live with that I would be thinking that might be why it doesn't run. Gee

Gee, how did that happen with the carbs, didn't you rebuild them? More the point, how did it run with jets not in situ??

Hopefully get them done this week or late next week, heading to Ireland for a few days next week on the Harley. Bike didn't run at all Dave, it would tickover sometimes but was just flooding. Before they become totally loose, they were coking up.

Thought you broke down on it on a run. I did break down on a run, they came loose during it. The after affects were coked up plugs first, then once the bike was not starting at all, flooding. By this time the jets must have been completely off.
