Just removed the lower crankcase on a 400 engine to to Helicoil the sump plughole, and was greeted by the unwelcome sight of two balance weights worth of cushdrive rubbers mostly clinging to the oil pickup gauze.
Does anyone know if you can fit 250 solid type weights without any ill effects, I do appreciate the 400 will probably have a different balance factor to the 250, but is it enough to be that much of a problem.
Anyone have a pair of solid 400 or 450 balance weights they could sell me by any chance, or have a method of converting cushdrive balance weights to solid that has proven reliable.

I'v built a few of these engines up now and always fit the later type balance weights (non cush rubber type) I'd say wherever you can find them buy them and fit them. chuck a new chain in there too, but I'm sure you were going to do that anyway

Thanks for that Buster, the thing is I seem to remember hearing that 250, and 400 balance weights are not tuned for the same rotating mass, whereas 400 and 450 ones are interchangeable do you happen know if that's correct? It would be a real pain to fit the 250 items only to find I'd built a giant vibrator.

there are different part numbers for them but I honestly dont think theres much difference if any, I may have just got lucky in the ones I'v fitted. I should probably get some scales and weigh and compare some but my next crackpot idea is to do away with the power sappers altogether

Have you yourself actually fitted 250 weights in a 400 and found it to be no problem, if so I'd have no issue doing likewise. I must be as big a crackpot as you because leaving them out altogether was the first thing I considered, but the thought of stripping it all down again if it's a disaster does rather put me off the idea.
I must say that riding my 400 with no rubbers in the weights at all you would never have known it seemed just as smooth and mechanically quiet as my 250.

I havent fitted (knowingly) 250 weights in a 400, though I might give it a go, I'd honestly never noticed a difference but as your pics show the the 400/450 ones are a fair bit meatier. I'd guess that accounts for the longer stroke and extra inertia that comes with it, looks like my 250 engines coming back apart to remove the 400 weights

just been back through my ebay history and some old engine build pics and I can now confirm fitting 250 weights in a 400 engine doesnt work, oops

just too add 450 weights work just fine in a 400 engine but 250 ones it turns out dont. with 250 weights in a 400 motor it revs through to about 5000rpm ok then gets horrible vibrations.
note to self, build one engine at a time instead of trying to be a clever b*gg*r

Just installed the solid balance weights on my 400, included in the full kit of parts I got from Germany was the spring shown below next to the original item. It's a strange sort of a spring within a spring, it's also made from a slightly heavier gauge of wire than the rather wimpy original. Seems to get job with great enthusiasm, took them a few years to get there, but Mr Honda got it sorted in the end..

I take it that the 400 weight is the bottom one?
