I just renewed the insurance on my VSTROM 650, and (amazingly) the price has actually gone down.
I read through the documents - as I noticed there were a TON of policy wording changes (mostly seem to be related to UBER type delivery activity and using the bike for criminal activities - nothing problematic for me), but I also noticed that the wording for modifications had changed - it used to focus on performance modifications, but now it says:
A modification's any alteration to your bike from the manufacturer's standard specification. This includes, but isn't limited to:
● Bar ends
● Changes to the air filter
● Heated grips
● Braided hoses.
Please note: optional extras fitted at the point of manufacture aren't classed as modifications
As it happens does not affect my VStrom, nothing has changed from point of manufacture, I have had it from new, so know that to be the case, but it would be REALLY easy to buy a second hand bike not knowing if some of these changes have been made (how would anyone know if a bar end had been changed to a third party alternative unless it was obvious?).
Sounds dubious to say the least. Pretty well EVERY classic bike would fall foul of this
Check your policy seems to be the order of the day, don't assume nothing has changed

Most insurers I’ve used in past allow 3 modifications and a performance mod they want manufacturers parts and prefer dealer fitted and they want to know power output increase from standard.A modification is classed as custom paint/handlebars/footrests/wheels/mudguards/exhaust etc etc. impossible to get a quote for my Harley Carole Nash the worst lot to deal with wouldn’t use them again as long as thesre’e a hole in my ar*e. Peter James accept all of the mods on any of my bikes so I’ve stuck with them for many years.
