Amongst other bikes, I last had a Superdream 36 years ago. Now semi retired and having my mid life crisis according to the missus. So, I'm a born again biker (once one always one!) and two weeks ago purchased this one. 1979 250N, 18,000 miles. Been stuck in a shed for 11 years and has had some light recommissioning. I'm having a few minor issues with her at the moment which I'm classing as 'shake down' problems, nothing more. The tail light has a mind of its own (internals have fallen apart-parts on order), struggling to get her to idle properly. Tachometer squealing like a throttled cat, and also oil leaking from where drive cable enters the engine. Steering lock keys missing, new lock arrived today waiting for me to fit. New tacho cable fitted today and all good. 'Oil leak' was merely oil that the previous owner had probably squirted down the cable. She is not mint and wont win prizes but I love the bike, like putting on my favoured underpants. She needs a thorough clean and for me to go on ever longer runs as I gain trust in the old girl. Question...see the side panels, they have a chrome screw (allen key head). Fairly neat job but I've never seen these fitted to any Superdream. Any ideas chaps?. Fitted by previous owner to stop side panels being nicked?. Hope you like the photo's and comments welcomed.

Nice bike as you say he probably had some borrowed at some time I am the last person to give advice about what you should do I would leave what it has evolved in to .we are just looking after them for the time there with us

Looks to be a genuinely nice kicker, the rear wheel is off a Dream so I’d probably change that to match the front SD wheel but other than that, not much to do. Looks good 👍

Low mileage ,kicker and in the best possible colour, nice .Looks just like my very first SD that was a 400 kicker back in 1980/81 ish

The detailed knowledge of members amazes me. I now see difference in wheels. Will the Dream rear wheel cause any issue?.(other than for a stickler for originally).
Also....what is a 'kicker?. I assume it means it's got a kick start?. Mine is leccy also

That's right Edgey a "kicker" is fitted with a kick start and the wheels are all interchangeable ,I could be wrong but I think the Dream wheels were steel and the Superdream ones were alloy so a weight difference the early SDs were fitted with comstars (which is what you have on the front ) and later ones (deluxe onwards ) had reverse comstars either in black or gold depending on the model. Here's some pics to help my first SD fitted with a kickstart and Comstars this was the 400N And my old 250 deluxe with no kickstart and reverse comstars Finally my old 400NC which came with gold reverse comstars hope this all helps

Nice bike with a lot of original features! I would look out for a decent s/h Superdream front mudguard- about the only thing I would change.....

It's not "wrong"- just a common aftermarket one that we see on quite a few SD's? Unkindly called a "Slabby". The OEM mudguard was much more rounded. It does change the whole look of the front end though- actually one of the first mods I did to FWF way back in 2014 when I got it...

As a CM owner, and not being that knowledgeable on the SD, I'd always assumed the "slabby's" were original as they seem to be fitted on so many bikes. I would agree that the more rounded, closer fitting, and less valanced style guard completely transforms the look of the front end. Am I correct in assuming the guard is identical to the ones fitted to the CM, it certainly looks the same, and I can't think of a reason why it should be any different.

Not sure about the CM question, need Terry for that one, but Silvers do a replica mudguard for the SD. It's based on the CX500, which is the same apart from a slightly more prominent ridge down the centre. It's about as close as you can get short of finding a decent original. Got them on all my SDs, but I have saved the slabby that I fitted to the 400NA many years ago - just in case www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB400N-SUPER-DREAM-1979/part_233154/

According to cmsnl they have different part numbers CM is 61100447000 and the SD is 61100413010 ,looking at the sketches the CM has a bit of an edge to it (and they cost more )
