Hi All
How easy is it just to use just Fingers and Finger Nails when fitting Piston & Rings into the Barrels on the SD?
I have never used either in the past when rebuilding Engines, but, have had the luxury of fitting Pistons and Rings one at a time and not two together.
Would be useful to know members experiences as putting my spares and tool list together.
Many thanks
Phil

Save your money. No need to buy a piston ring compressor. Fitted both a 250 and a 400 with just my fingers Bring the piston rings in position according to the manual and, with some amount of engine oil, just slide the barrels over the pistons, keeping the rings in place with your fingers. Just take it easy and do not rush and the job will be done in a few minutes.

Agree with Pebe, the cylinder bases are tapered to allow the pistons & rings to slide in. Done it a few times, the only problem I had was one time on my 400NA, which smoked on 1 cylinder. On taking the barrels off, the ring gaps were aligned on that piston. They definitely weren't like that when I started feeding them in, I must have just twisted my hand as I was doing it, so watch out for that.

I've never used a proper ring compressor, it's always been the homemade tin can effort.

Many thanks guys much appreciated that gives the confidence to carry on without the need for ring compressors.
Just awaiting parts now and need someone to give the Upper Crankcase a once over as someone caused a hole at the bottom of the Headbolt in the upper Crankcase when they rebuilt it (oh the joys)!!
Regards
Phil
