First of all sorry to admin is this is in the wrong section, please move if needed.
Hey guys I'm just about to get going on my 79 kicker.
I'm wanting to reuse as many original parts as I can and so that means cleaning them up.
First question is What do you guys use to clean parts that can't be painted, plastic parts and rubbers ect? I've tried wd40 in the past and it just doesn't seem to last long.
Second question is My controls are slightly broken, I need the red kill switch and the black indicator, just the plastic bits, is there anywhere to buy them from?
Cheers Dave

Cheers Dave Morning Dave Having just stripped SME last winter I cleaned most of it down with GUNK degreaser - metal plastic and rubber - then washed with Fairy Liquid (Other Washing Up Liquids are available) Most of my Rubbers were so bad I replaced them (or have bought replacements) The switches are normally a single unit but sure you can pick up a donor fairly cheaply

Cheers Dave There's a few rubber rejuvenators on the market which work on the rubbers after a good going over with gunk and a thorough wash. Plastic is difficult to get back to original as it faces over time. One trick I use on Dyson vacuum cleaner bins is baby oil. Apply after a good clean, leave for 20 mins and buff with a microfibre cloth. Makes them sparkly and new looking but does go after use as the dirt swirly around is like a sand blaster. Someone else I know uses hairspray to do the same but that, I haven't tried. You might get the control bits on ebay. If there's nothing listed, message a few of the superdream breakers and ask them. The complete controls are usually listed.

Gunk Ultra in a re-fillable spray thingy.
Agitate with a paint brush, then rinse.
5l for normally £10 from Amazon and use an old spray...thingy.
Glad I could help.
Gee.

Thankyou chaps, I will give gunk another go, I've tried it in the past and not been impressed, was going to buy some kerosene and used that but I'll give the gunk a go first.
Cheers Dave

Brasso is a great product for polishing up plastics (after you have used a cleaner on them).
Also seek out a product made by Carplan (and others) called black trim restorer. It's like an automotive boot / trim polish. Ideal to help restore and re-nourish items such as the rear mudguard extension / chainguard etc, rubbers etc. Halfords stock a lot of this stuff.

a couple of products I'v used on my own restoration. the degreaser isnt as good as gunk/jizer was back in the day but at least its solvent based. the back to black works nicely but I reckon it will be a labour of love keeping the plastics looking good.
