This question has probably been asked before but having looked through the forum and online I have several conflicting answers so none the wiser. I am going to pick up a 250N tomorrow which is registered on DVLA but no V5, I would like to be able to check that the engine and frame numbers at least look right. Can't find anything online or here which gives me a range for a 250N registered 79-80 (V) so I can check when picking up. Does anybody have offhand a number range for either number that I could compare the numbers to to ensure they are at least in the right range? I have several other bikes but A 250N was the first bike I was ever on (as a pillion) many moons ago and I want to restore on back it its original condition as a bit of nostalgia, one have come up mucho cheapo locally that I can't turn down which is complete apart from exhaust and front caliper and have a number of new parts and a newly powdercoated frame... May be haunting this forum a fair bit if all goes well...........

From memory....CB250NE-200 to 201 then the last four digits, the last four digits of engine numbers and frame numbers are normally slightly apart, say 0600 frame, 0601 engine, spread of nil to 25 different.

1980 was a bit of a changeover year (in regards to UK registration and the 250/400N).
In a nutshell.....if the engine and frame are original and it has a kickstart then you should see (CB250N) 20***** numbers.
If it is the NA model without kickstart and again, assuming engine and frame are the originals then you should see (CB250N) 21***** numbers.
And as John said (funnily enough we also talked about this on zoom earlier) the numbers do not always have an exact match but they will be close.

After writing that I guess 1980 was no different to any other years....
As a further example, you could get a new CB400N-A in 1981 (like my own SBY, registered March 81) but the NB with the sexy flared seat tail was already in the showrooms then.....so again, you could say 1981 was also a changeover year....and everything that followed.
It was all to do with what the dealers had left in stock and I suppose what discounts / deals were being done to clear 'last year' models.

Guys, I had seen the forum link but explanations above were very helpful. it should be a 79 model which makes it a kicker but I don't have a pic of that side of the bike as yet. At least I know what sort of number to look for and the info about slightly different engine numbers is very useful. Will see what turns up tomorrow when I collect. The idea is to do a complete nut and bolt rebuild in silver, just like the one I was on in about 1981-2 Just finished a 77 Yamaha Triple from the frame up so this one should be next.

Be interesting to see the story of the Yam rebuild on the forum We all have lots of different bikes

Picked up the SD this afternoon and it seems to be a 1979 250N frame with a combo start engine (not the factory fitted one but at least the correct type. The whole bike need stripped down and refurbished but most of it is there. I need exhausts and a front brake caliper so will start looking for them, the rest is just needing blasted and painted and put together properly with some odds and sods replaced or found.
The rack is already off and isn't going back on so also need grabrails!
