As my title says, I have always wondered about the colour of this individual and how they get it that colour. This is for sale on eBay at the mo, good money for it if he gets it but it made me think of how to get this colour back, is it gold/zinc plating? It looks a mixture of lovely colours. Just curious. Gee.

Hello Gee, The electrics plate is just a simple type of yellow zinc plating.

Hi Gee. I believe that after zinc plating they dip the item in a passivate solution for a short time .
I got some last year for yellow passivate as you have shown . It has all sorts of heath warning on the bottle.
Never got round to using it yet though.
Regards Graham

I did a lot on mine a few years ago and it has all but disappeared it is harder than you think to do it with the kits very hit and miss I'm going to send mine to Smethursts this winter to get it done properly while bike is tucked away then and now back to zinc again

They look great in the pics, I do like the gold colour. I have about 5 of them and was thinking of getting them done like Nick's pics, Goldy. I remember I painted one gloss black, from memory it looked ok. Gee.

It sat in the shed for about 5 years before that. I don't like to rush things...can you tell? Gee.

I bought a kit and then bottled out of using it, it just seemed easier to give someone with all the industrial gear £35 and I got these back (clear/silver passivate) I think the passivate honda used on many of the nuts and bolts was chromate (the plater I used only did silver and yellow) but I'm probably wrong. I should have got the carb bars and centre stand pivot done in yellow but this was an industrial firm doing me a favour and I didnt want to mess them about. the other thing I'd say is the guy who plated these didnt want to know when I first phoned him, when I told him I'd polished metal commercially he quickly changed his tune and had them done for me next day, I was well chuffed. preparation, as with all things, is key. all I used was a wire brush wheel in an old drill, then scrubbed everything with scotchbrite and a solvent based degreaser.

Yep that's the stuff " Chromate " thinking back, I think the longer you leave the item in the solution the stronger the colour gets .

I think the yellow chromate did look ok to start but didn't last once a year had passed it had faded it was just like it hadn't bonded to the zinc there is still a bit of colour on the carb brackets but not a lot
