I have a 1983 model (It is stated so on registation), but when I had to have new drive chain set I ordered for a 1983 bike and received a spocket with 5 holes. My bike has only 4 holes, and to get correct 36T spocket, I had to order for a year 1980 bike.
Can anyone explain this?
Are newer CB400N's with 5 hole spockets?

never heard of 5 hole sprockets for any of the SD's. as far as I know they are all 4 hole. the chain pitch altered from earlier to later models, 530 on the early ones and 520 on the later ones (probably got that the wrong way round, but someone will correct me if I have)

The CB400ND uses the 5 hole sprocket, which was a 520 chain, though most of the after market sprockets for that sprocket carrier type are for 525 (1332) or 530 (1334[50]) sprockets. It's listed as 1984 model (though production probably started in 1983).
The 1980 model used the 530 chain, the 1981 & 1982 (NB) and the 1983 (NC) used the narrower 520. (Not all countries changed to the 520 perhaps). 4 hole Sprocket to suit the comstar wheels. The central thickness for the 4 hole sprockets remained approx 9mm, it was only the chain bearing area and the drive teeth that were reduced to 6mm, for the 520 (2/8" chain).
