And thats the confusing bit The NC you have posted is the same part no as the NB Euro but a lot of the German NB's seem to vary like this one that sold on .de recently

could be that theres no right answer. imagine this possible scenario, theres a communication cock up at the factory and instead of leaving the round area bare aluminium and painting the logo, someone makes a small cock up and paints it black leaving the honda logo bare aluminium. then its a case of damn, where are we going to use these parts up? it might be a tough one to swallow but theres a lot more of this goes on on production lines than most people would believe

For what it's worth, and to add to the confusion, here's the covers on my '83 400.
Engine number for reference is 2302660.
Why is one side completly black and the other not?

It is my belief that the NA in Germany should be as per your brochure ie the clutch cover should be like this:

That is what I was saying at the meet, I think your German 400 has a NC clutch cover, not that all this really matters 🤣, but it does to me.

That is what I was saying at the meet, I think your German 400 has a NC gene cover, not that all this really matters 🤣, but it does to me. But it’s no ordinary cover - it’s a German one .... I think 🤔

Thought it was simple in that the low power euro 400NB had ‘all black’ 790 part number ending items?
The covers with the silver middles were put on the bikes with the silver rocker, or the full power models if you prefer.

This is 1980 as well I I prefer the blue and then the black colour schemes over the silver, however Honda surely got the money shot for this brochure, it looks great 💪🏿

The right hand clutch cover for the 2G Eng No starting 32... seems clearly black except for HONDA....

Yeah I reckon from the factory that all the models had the same generator cover with the silver middle. The ones that are all black have been changed / sprayed since leaving the factory.
Agree that the low power clutch cover was certainly all black. Parts diagrams would confirm all this.
