Does anyone know of a method of finding the VIN Number of a Bike with only the Registration Number and Engine Number? (and not having the V5 Registration Document)
I bought a CB400N Honda as Scrap which I am working on and need to obtain a Replacement V5 from DVLA The VIN Number is needed for the V62 Application Form. (I have the Last 5 Numbers of the VIN)
Any Ideas?

If the bike is in your physical possession, you will know that it has the VIN number stamped on the head stock. The VIN plate is only a secondary information display plate that echoes that stamped number. The average MOT man looks for that number and does not even pay any attention to the VIN plate as they can be easily replaced by criminals (two rivets?).
Go look at the bike and get the VIN from the RHS of the head stock and write it on the form.
Problem solved Churchman.

When you apply for a log book the evidence DVLA accept is a photo of the VIN no on the headstock not a photo of the VIN plate

A nunber of years ago, I aquired a kicker 250 engine and frame, on checking the headstock number was incorrect, the last 3 digits were incorrect in order. Photo of frame and engine, photo of numerous MOT certs matching the frame No.etc.
I got a letter back from DVLA, you will have to take it for a vehicle inspection in Dundee! (Why Dundee why not closer Edinburgh) Got some droid on the phone, its your duty to take it for an inspection, at the appropriate place now. I replied I could not (Dad was away on holiday, so could not even lift the engine back in the car, getting nowhere, ask for a supervisor. The supervisor seemed to be human, but still wanted a vehicle inspection should I put it on the road, it was the engine I really wanted, but the documents seemed to suggest an original blue CB250N, been sitting for a long time now....one day I'll do it. I said to the DROID when he was getting stroppy, and trying to get me to go to Dundee straight away, that they would not even know I had the frame if I were not trying to correct the detail (had both bits of the V5). Customer satisfaction went from 8 to 2 during that phone call! Maybe should of asked for a new V5!

Many years ago I bought a Honda XL250 Motorsport , SAL848R , on taking the engine out of the frame to paint it up I noticed the engine number didn't match the V5 so sent it off to change it - as you could back then . I rebuilt the bike in all good faith got it MOTd etc and then one day looked at the frame number......that wasn't right either . I went round the local Police house ( yes that long ago) and explained to him , he wasn't that concerned/interested and just looked at the number plate screws and suggested writing a letter to DVLA . I wrote a letter to DVLA explaining the situation , not sending the logbook at this stage .......was amazed two weeks later to receive a new V5 with the proper frame number on it ! Result , lot harder now to change anything even engine numbers. Think it's just down to luck which employee gets your issue.
PS Just asked Honda UK for a dating proof letter for my 1968 CL , apparently now to register a "Historic" vehicle you only need a NOVA and proof of age no insurance and of course no MOT requirement .

Hi BB. unable to check vin number. But if you have recently applied for a new v5c log book it should have the correct vin number on that. If it was incorrect they would have contacted you.
how that helps.

Ashley No dramas - i was actually given the original sales receipt with the bike (£1230 with fairing crash bars panniers and rear carrier - 15/06/81) which detailed the engine and frame number which corresponds with the V5. My only concern was that frame number on headstock looks like it may have been ground off / restamped somewhere down the line. Regards, BB
